My dad, Charles Denison didn't speak much but in his last year he did mention that he fought fires in London. I assume during the Blitz. The Forgotten Army – M E Dennert 2004

I watch with pride on Anzac Day

The lads as they march by

I share with them grim memories

But pause to wonder why

One army is forgotten still…

They toiled beneath the sky

those girls who gave their utmost

In rain, hail, wet or dry

They were the ones who tilled the soil

Tho’ some folks thought them balmy

But I’m proud I was a member

of the Womens’ Land Army.

Sgt. Charles Arthur Denness .     British Army 797 Water Transport Coy. RASC   from 7 Rose Hill, Hampton

My Father, Charlie Denness served in Italy during or before the invasion of Sicily by the allies. His job for the Allied Services, was to be the Sergeant Skipper of a Tea Clipper ship, to deliver guns and ammunition for the use of our army in the invasion. I have seen photo's of my dad standing on the deck of his Tea Clipper with some of his crew. Dad told us some stories of what he did in Italy and on one occasion, when he had returned from one of the 'trips', Dad and his first officer left the ship in harbour to report to his HQ. On his return he found his ship at the bottom of the harbour, a German E-Boat had got into the harbour and sunk the Tea Clipper, with some of the crew still aboard, which include one of his pals 'Mac' who lost some fingers in the action, but some of the crew died and their bodies could be seen in the clear water, tangled in the rigging.

I have tried to find out more about Dad's 'adventure' in Italy during the Second World War, but even though I produced all the information necessary, Enlistment Notice, Grade card, Registration Certificate, Soldiers Service and Pay Book, 3 Soldiers Pay Books, Soldiers Release Book and Transfer certificate to the Army Reserve. But even with all this information, I have found nothing, it's as if my Dad didn't exist. Is there anyone out there, still alive, who remembers Charlie Denness and his adventures in Italy in the Second World War.

Charles William Denney .     Royal Marines HMS Berwick

Charles William Denney (now deceased) is my father. As far as I am aware some of his time in WW2 was spent on HMS Berwick, serving in the Royal Marines. I am interested to trace all of the ships on which he served and their activity, campaigns etc. during WW2. I don't know any detail, but I believe some time was spent on Baltic convoys

HWJ Denney .     British Army

HWJ Denney served with the British Army. I have his unissued dogtags, made in preparation for deployment to the Far East and would love to get them home to his family. I am happy to cover all costs. If you are a family member or can put me in touch with them please get in touch.

Pte. George Alexander "Snowy" Dennis MBE.     Australian Army   from Hughenden, QLD Australia

My father George Alexander Dennis was in Stalag VIIA and Stalag VIIIB during 1941-1945. He is now 93 years old living in Sydney Australia. Often now he seems to be back in the POW camps with his developing dementia. He used to never talk about the war but now it seems to persecute his mind. If anyone has any connection with my father, we would be very interested.

Can you help us to add to our records?

The names and stories on this website have been submitted by their relatives and friends. If your relations are not listed please add their names so that others can read about them

Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?

If so please let us know.

Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.

Celebrate your own Family History

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
