Harold Douglas "Deane" Deane .     British Army 5th Batallion Gloucester Regiment

Story Submitted to local newspaper.

Sir - It was very interesting to read the story of the 5th Glosters retreat from Ledringham prior to their evacuation form Dunkirk in 1940.

I would, if I may, like to add one or two facts to that story! I was, on that day, one of a party of six men in a trench on the edge of the village, waiting for the German attack. On the previous evening we had taken part in a bayonet charge in the main street of Ledringham, also hoping to dislodge a sniper from the church tower.

The next day, however, we dug our trench and settled in. By late afternoon things seemed to be very quiet. Then at dusk, we heard a motorcycle approaching.

It turned out to be Pte. B. Johns, our despatch rider, who had come to warn us that the Battalion had pulled out of the village hours before. We were to make our way, as best we could to the coast.

Darkness was falling and the windmill (mentioned in your story) was almost destroyed, the church was ablaze and we made our way through a field of red cabbage with German tracer bullets slicing through the cabbages at regular intervals. In retrospect, rather a funny sight!

Having picked up one or two stragglers, we made our way, without a map towards Dunkirk, with the instinct of a homing pigeon.

Marching on through the night we arrived just after dawn, a mile to the east of the town to be taken off some 30 hours later by a destroyer.

Others may have their own stories to tell, but I thought this might be of interest to some of your readers. We did not all escape the bed of the brook as Mr Walter Lord suggests in his book "The Miracle of Dunkirk" H. D. Deane (late 51849561 5h Battallion, Glos. Regiment)

He died in 1994

Richard T Deane .

My grandfather, Richard T Deane and his first wife Dorothy Wyatt were aboard the City of Benares. Dorothy was lost due to exposure and he gave her up to the ocean to allow room for someone else to climb into the life boat he had commandeered. Or so the story goes. It left him widowed with 7 children, but he later remarried and had 2 more children. He died at the age of 89 in 1973. My mother said he rarely talked of the tragedy but there is mention of him in a book called "Children of the Benares"

Tpr. Frank DeAngeli .     British Army 56th Recce Regiment, 5 Sqd. Reconnaissance Corps   from 28 Glenister Park Rd., Streatham Vale, London

My father Frank DeAngeli began the war as a student at Battersea Grammar School and later joined the Pioneer Corps. As he was born in Rome he was considered an enemy alien (he had never lived in Italy and spoke no Italian). In the Pioneer Corps he met and worked with many wonderful aliens, mostly Germans who had fled Germany. According to my father, all were eager to join a fighting unit and do their part. Later in the war they were given their chance and my father was able to enlist in the Reconnaissance service in 1944, I think, he said he joined after Monte Cassino and passed it on the way to join his group.

When he met up with his group, a Lieutenant Edwards said to him "are you related to Rico De Angeli?" and my father said "that is my brother Rico!" and he took my father into his troop. My father served under Lieutenant Edwards, who he described as a true hero. Lieutenant Edwards received a Silver Star and a Military Cross which according to my father was very much deserved.

My father's service was in the Gothic Line part of the fight and the main struggle centered around the heavily fortified River Senio. The river was mined, the banks were mined, the hill above the banks were dotted with armed turrets and a tunnel ran along the River for resupply and communications. He drove a Bren Carrier.

The 56 Recce was the first Allied Unit to enter Austria after surrender. My father said his job on the first night was to guard white Russians who had fought with the Germans against the Communist Soviet Army. They were about to be repatriated to the Soviet Union where they would certainly be killed so they were considered to be unpredictable as they had nothing to lose. My father said he was assigned a German solider as a partner.

I found a small German dictionary with my father's name and a wartime date in it. I asked my father about it and he said there was a young lady he wanted to communicate with. Of course, the soldiers were discouraged from making friends with the civilian population.

At the end of the War, my father and other young Recces, were pulled into other units and my Dad was moved to the 12th Royal Lancers. Sent first to Egypt and then to Palestine, where they were assigned the job of keeping the peace between the Palestinians and the Israelis.

Capt. Allan Dearden .     British Army 2nd Btn. North Staffordshire Regiment   from Nottingham

My grandfather, Allan Dearden, joined the North Staffordshire Regiment in the 1920's, rising through the ranks. As part of the BEF he went to France in 1939 and was evacuated back to the UK from Dunkirk in June 1940 , after which he spent the next 2 years in Lincolnshire as part of home defence before they were sent to North Africa.

I believe that after this they went to Italy (Anzio) after which his record is a little hazy. He was discharged around 1947 with the rank of Captain (he had been a lieutenant whilst serving)and returned to his family in Nottingham. He died when I was quite young, but apparently spoke little about his war exploits or his time in the army.

(d.6th Apr 1941)

My uncle William Dearden served briefly on HMS Glendower in October/November 1940. Sadly, he was killed in action on 6th April 1941 whilst serving on the MV Torrent, which was engaged in mine-hunting duties near Falmouth. A mine detonated, killing most on board. Fortunately, his body was recovered and he is buried in Bardsley Christ Church graveyard. He was 20 years old. His grave was recently acknowledged by the CWGC, and a plaque is to be placed outside the church to recognise the grave as an official war grave.

W/O Arthur Deare .     Royal Air Force   from London

Half my family worked at the 'drome' from before the war (Collins, Gregory, Theobald) I heard lots of little stories heard from my parents and relatives; including how Mum & Dad met at a party arranged at the Village Hall after Dad’s crew sunk a u-boat. My Dad, Arthur Deare was W/O1 Signals (aircrew, Coastal Command) and was at Leuchars in 1945 but I don't know which squadron he was with. If someone can provide me with his squadron No. would be a great help.

If anyone can remember my grandparents, Grace and Will Collins; Molly (my Mum) and her cousin Janet 'Jenny' McFarlane. Please get in touch.

Celebrate your own Family History

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
