World War 2 Two II WW2 WWII 1939 1945

2nd Lt. Elwood E. Collins .     USAAF 44th Bomb Squadron

I am looking for anyone who might have known my Uncle Elwood. His plane, which I believe was the Sanchez Belle, was shot down and 5 were captured and taken to Stalag 7A Moosburg (Work Camps 3324-46 Krumbachstrasse 48011, Work Camp 3368 Munich 48-11). Four of the men escaped but my uncle remained till the liberation. He was in the Middle East Theatre, heavy bombardment and his Serial number was O&733533. I recently learned he passed away at 90 never having talked about his experience. For 18 yrs I have been trying to find anyone who served with him, etc. to contact me please.

F/S Ernest Lewis Collins .     Royal Air Force rear gunner 106 Sqd. (d.30th Aug 1944)

Sgt. Eugene Patrick "Jimmy" Collins .     Royal Air Force 50 Squadron   from Nettleham

I am sorry I don't have much of a story about my Dad's war experiences, except to know he was very young, very brave and served as a rear gunner. His name was Eugene Collins, known as Jimmy or Owen. I am trying to piece together any info I can find about him, even if he should have had any medals.

L/Cpl. George Edward Collins .     British Army

My grandfather was a POW in Stalag XXA from 1940 to liberation. He was L/Cpl George Edward Collins. I have a postcard from him showing two mates in the snow outside a hut. Does anyone know anything about him?

Cpl. Gordon Whyte Collins MID..     Royal Air Force 126 Squadron   from Ilford, Essex

My father, Gordon Collins, was on the ship, HMS Welshman that arrived in Malta as the siege of Malta started. He had volunteered to take the place of another young airman who had a young family because he was a single man. Unfortunately, my father died in 1960 still a young man, so all I have are many photos of Malta, Grottaglie and Sicily and his wonderful books on mechanics (mainly Spitfires). He joined the RAF because he wanted to be a pilot, but he was severely colour blind so he was ground crew. He was a wonderful artist and I believe he painted a lot of ensignia on planes, lorries, etc. The illustrations in his mechanics books are wonderful.

The names of some of the men he was friendly with are: Dick Pulford, Alex Haggerty from Perth, Nobby Porter from Putney, Ginger Gilbert and Bill Stewart from Killiecrankie.

He was offered a commission after the war to teach mechanics, but by then he had met my mother at a dance in Saffron Walden and had had enough of the Air Force. I was only thirteen when my father died so my information is very patchy, but I would love to know more about his time during the war.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
