My dad, Hector William Clifford, was a navigator on Lancasters based at Little Staughton. We have a photo of 582 Squadron and dad is on it. His brothers and sister said that when he returned to New Zealand after the war, he was a very different young man to the one who had left. He died in 1999, never having spoken of his war experiences.

FO Peter William Clifford .     Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve 148 Sqdn.   from Easton, Hampshire, UK

(d.30th July 1944)

Sgt. Ralph Frank Clifford MID.     British Army C Sqdn. Staffordshire Yeomanry

My grandfather, Ralph Clifford, served in the Staffordshire Yeomanry during the Second World War. He was in Squadron C and a sergeant. He served from 1939 until the end of the war. He was Mentioned in Dispatches for bravery but I am still to establish why. I only discovered this after he passed away and I was presented with a newspaper cutting covering the award. He was part of the war effort in El Alamein through to Tunis and was part of the D Day landings.

Every Christmas we had a family tradition of eating dates after dinner as a nod to his time in the Middle East. He was a loving and kind man and adored by his family. He lived a long and fruitful life in Birmingham and then Minehead. He was passionate about the Scouts and held the position of District Commissioner for the Sutton Coldfield Scouts. Ralph was a civil engineer and later in life he worked in finance until his retirement.

Ralph presented the Staffordshire Yeomanry Museum with a glass presentation case containing the Staffordshire Yeomanry military badges which can still be seen there today. He is also in a picture in a book on the Staffordshire yeomanry during the WW11 which is sold in the Museum.

He never spoke about the war and I very much wish I had known everything I have since discovered so I could say thank you and tell him that I am extraordinarily proud of him.

Sgt. Thomas Clifford .     British Army

Flight Sergeant Alfred Pearsall Clifford-Reade .     RAF 102 Squadron (d.15th April 1941)

I am trying to find out some information about my uncle, Pilot Officer Robert J W Williams who was killed in action on April 15th 1941. I understand that he was shot down over Boulogne on his third mission with 102 Squadron. I presume he would have flown Whilteys at that time, based out of Topcliffe.

I have visited his war grave in Bourthes, France and those of his crew. The Pilot was 741381 Sergeant J A Norris, Gunners 701654 A P Clifford-Reade and 755097 RT Selley, and Pilot Officer R A Childs.

The crew:

  • Sergeant Robert Thomas Selley, RAF VR 755097. Killed 15/03/1941, age 29 (Bourthes Churchyard)
  • Sergeant James Arthur Norris, RAF VR 741381. Killed 15/03/1941 (Bourthes Churchyard)
  • Pilot Officer Robert John Wyndham Williams, RAF VR 87359. Killed 15/03/1941, age 23 (Bourthes Churchyard)
  • Flight Sergeant Alfred Pearsall Clifford-Reade, RAF VR 701654. Killed 15/03/1941, age 21 (Bourthes Churchyard)
  • Pilot Officer R A Childs

  • Pte William Clifton .     British Army 7th Btn. Royal Worcestershire Regiment   from Malvern

Bill Clifton, 2nd from left front row. Ernie Cameron, 3rd from left in back row.

I came across this photograph of my late uncle, Pte. 11719 Bill Clifton of the Worcestershire Regiment, amongst my mother's things after she died. The date on the back is March 1942. He was in Stalag XXA (176) and is second from the left on the front row. He would have been about 23 when this was taken.

I remember him coming home to Malvern after the war, although I was only about 3 at the time. The family and neighbours put flags across the street, and there was another soldier with him, but I can't remember a name. Perhaps someone remembers them, or this picture ?

The names and stories on this website have been submitted by their relatives and friends. If your relations are not listed please add their names so that others can read about them

Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?

If so please let us know.

Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.

    Celebrate your own Family History

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
