Sgt. Edwin Walter Bickerstaff . British Army 1/6th Btn. East Surrey Regiment from Croydon
Edwin Bickerstaff was posted with the BEF to France. He left his gold watch (a present from his parents on his 21st Birthday) in a shop in Rouen for repair and then were told to leave the area quickly , so never got it back. He did a 100 route march, unsure whether he was evacuated at Dunkirk, but anyway, disembarked in UK on 20th of June 1940, possibly based at Wittering? He was then based in Chichester and by 20th of October 1940 was in Southampton which was badly bombed. From his service record, it looks as though he was injured as had 21 days in hospital (therefore didn't go with his mates to Mount Casino). Instead, spent the rest of the war as a Sgt, NCO Instructor at 12 ITC at Canterbury. He was injured again in February 1945 and was hospitalized. In January 1946 he receieved a notice of impending release while at Shorncliffe Barracks, Cheriton, Kent.

Frank William Biddlecombe . British Army 6th Btn. Royal West Kent Regiment
My son and I are taking my father to Gdansk to revisit his wartime POW sites. Dad is Frank William Biddlecombe. Now 85, he was a Private in the 6th Batt Royal West Kents. They were sent to France in the BEF and were taken prisoners virtually en masse at Doullens fighting what turned out to a rearguard for Dunkirk. A few weeks later he arrived at Thorn Stalag XXA. He was soon moved out to a satellite camp in Pietsendorf (Piecki) a suburb of Danzig (Gdansk) and from there engaged in his trade as a carpenter iaw the Geneva Convention working in Sopot for several years. In the last 12 months he has started talking about his experiences to his grandchildren. My sister and I have never heard any of this and the horrors he and his colleagues endured are mind bending! Thankfully we are recording this and I am taking a tape recorder with me to capture as much as possible. May I ask if anyone has any experience of visiting Poland and Thorn (Torun) in particular? Would much appreciate any tips; we plan to visit Thorn, Pietsendorf and possible Bromberg (Bydgoszcz) all places dad has talked about.
G. Biddlecombe .

Can you help us to add to our records?
The names and stories on this website have been submitted by their relatives and friends. If your relations are not listed please add their names so that others can read about them
Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?
If so please let us know.
Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.
Celebrate your own Family History
Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.
Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.
The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.
The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.
If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
