World War 2 Two II WW2 WWII 1939 1945

Alfred Bettridge .     British Army 930th Port Construction Coy. Royal Engineers   from Bootle

Alfie Bettridge is my first cousin. I have pictures of him and I also have a piece of music from that period that he wrote the music to, another soldier wrote the words. The song is called North African Blues (my older sister can sing it). The front cover has the regimental badge with all the countries on. It is dated 1941-1944.

P/O. Austin Victor James Bettridge .     Royal Air Force No. 233 Squadron   from Nottinghamshire

(d.1st Nov 1942)

Austin Bettridge was shot down on 1st of November 1942 near Malta and never found.

A/Ldg.Tel. Charles George Betts .     Royal Navy HMS Nigeria (d.12 Aug 1942)

A/Ldg.Tel. Charles George Betts .     Royal Navy HMS Nelson (d.12th Aug 1942)

Derek Lewis Betts .     Bevin Boys   from Lutterworth, Leics

Derek Betts was my father and he was picked to become a Bevin Boy when he was 18. He was born in 1926. He was sent to the Dunston On Tyne mine and it was arranged that he stayed with his sister's future mother-in-law and apparently she was very hostile to him. Not sure how long he was in the mines but had an accident and was sent to hospital. He was helping another man carry a very heavy piece of metal. The other man dropped his end. Derek received a hernia as a result.

His hernia was operated on and repaired. Whilst he was in hospital he was given the new drug Penicillin. Unfortunately, he proved to be highly allergic to the drug and almost died. He was sent home and never returned to the mines.

Upon his recovery he was sent to work as a security guard on troops ships who were travelling the world bringing back wounded service men at the end of the war.

Ellen Betts .     Munitions Worker

I have discovered that my mother, Ellen Betts, worked at a munitions factory during the war years, it was a (then) secret wartime arms factory at Haswell, Nr Easington, Co Durham? It seems the factory was discovered by the Germans and an attempt to bomb it took place about 1940 but the damage was minimal and production was not stopped.

If anyone has information or photos I would love to hear from them. Most of the female workers have passed away but some (well into their 80s) have fond memories.

Harold James Betts .     British Army Seaforth Highlanders   from Northwich, Cheshire

My father, Harold James Betts, was in the Seaforth Highlanders during WW2. He often mentioned marching across France but only told us that he was evacuated from Dunkirk some years after the war. In a small cupboard in our pantry was a tiny red tin which contained tomato puree, something unheard of in England at the time, and I remember he told me that he had carried it in his rucksack all the way across France. We never opened it. He came home to a wife and three children, and not surprisingly, nine months later a fourth child, another daughter, was born. (I am the fifth child, yet another daughter). Following Dunkirk my father was sent to a base in Scotland near to Crieff. My mother went up to see him for a week and during that time he was injured riding a motorcycle guarding a convoy. He refused to go to hospital until he had spoken to his wife. The lady who she was staying with told the soldiers that my mother was in the local cinema and the ambulance went there to find her. A notice went up on the screen asking Ada Betts to go to the entrance of the cinema and only after he had seen her did he agree to go to hospital. The surgeon, who had a German sounding name, became Dad's hero as he saved his leg which was badly broken. Incredible really that he survived Dunkirk then was invalided out after being badly hurt falling off his motorbike. Amazingly, the hospital was in what is now the very upmarket Gleneagles Hotel. Many years later, he and Mum visited the Gleneagles Hotel and happened to meet the actor who played Jed Clampet in the Beverly Hill Billies in the bar.

My father's Commanding Officer was called Christopher Miles and when my mother was pregnant with me they thought that perhaps they would have another boy, and I would be given his name. I arrived so they called me Christine in his memory.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
