Sub.Lt. John Edward Cama HMS Dinosaur

John Cama piloted a landing craft the day after the D-Day Normandy landings. As a veteran, he later returned twice to the D-Day landing beaches. John died in June 2008. Sadly, that was 6 years too soon to qualify for award of France's Legion d'honneur. In June 2014, on the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings, the French president announced that the medal would be awarded to all British veterans who had fought for the liberation of France. However, the medal could not be awarded posthumously.

One of his nieces

AB. Samuel Isaiah Parkes HMS Copra

Dad, Samuel Isaiah Parkes didn't talk much about the war. We know he drove the landing crafts, and he had a perforated eardrum as they fired the guns on board ship before he could get his protection on. He suffered terribly with his ear after the war. He served from 1942 until 1946 in HMS Ganges, HMS Pembroke, HMS Dinosaur and HMS Copra.

Able Sea. James "Monty" Montgomery Tank Landing Craft HMS Dinasour

My father James Montgomery joined the Royal Navy in August 1921 as a volunteer at the age of 20. After basic training he went to HMS Pembroke and HMS Quebec until March 1942 when he is shown on his service records as been attached to HMS Dinosaur and Cobra. HMS Cobra was a training centre for Landing Craft among other courses but was also used to cover any gaps where the name of a ship wasn't known.

My father has the North Africa Star and he told me stories of transiting the Med to get there. He also showed me a picture of a ship that he served on that unfortunately was torpedoed on its way back. My father had, luckily for him, been taken off that ship prior to it departing.

On 6th June 1944 my father was in Tank Landing Craft on Omaha beach in support of US forces. My father told me about Omaha beach but it wasn't until after his death when I watched Saving Private Ryan that I realized exactly what that must have been like.

Richard Addis was the 13th of the 13 children of Sir Charles and Lady Addis, of Woodside, Frant, Sussex. He was born in London on the 1st December 1916. He married Gill, nee Dearmer in London on the 9th December 1941. Their son, David, was born on 10th March 1944 (one son died at birth 17 Oct 1942). As a Probationary Temporary Sub Lieutenant RNVR, Dick was sent in April 1941 for a fortnight's training at HMS Nimrod, the anti-submarine base in Campbeltown, commanded by his elder brother Charles, who was a Captain RN. The new entries were lined up on joining to be greeted by the commanding officer who, when he came to his brother, asked "What's your name?" "Addis, sir", Dick declared. At which Charles with a straight face replied "Oh yes, I believe I know your parents."
