SS Lackenby
The SS. Lackenby was a Steam merchant of 5,112 tons, built in 1928 by W. Gray & Co Ltd, West Hartlepool, she was owned by Sir R. Ropner & Co Ltd, West Hartlepool and was based in the town.
She was lost on the 25th of January 1943, Sunk by U-624 commanded by Ulrich Graf von Soden-Fraunhofen with the loss of her crew of 46.
23rd Jan 1943 SS Lackenby lost with all hands The steamship Lackenby, commanded by Capt. W. A. Allon, with a cargo of 8000 tons of phosphate, was torpedoed and sunk by a German submarine on January 23rd, 1943, at approx. lat. 55° N., long. 47° W.
She was sailing with Convoy SC-117 en route to Tampa, Florida via New York and Loch Ewe from London. She became a straggler from the convoy and was hit by two torpedoes from U-624 and sank south of Cape Farewell. The master, 38 crew members and seven gunners were lost.

Fireman and Trimmer. Peter Alexander Fraser SS Lackenby (d.25th Jan 1943) Peter Fraser was fireman and trimmer on board the SS Lackenby that went down on 25th of January 1943.
He was born in 1898 in Partick, Lanarkshire, Scotland, and served as a merchant seaman.
All on board the vessel were lost as per cited on this website.
He is honoured at Tower Hamlets.
I am a descendant of Peter's family who is building a family tree.

Chf.Stwd. James Gray SS Lackenby (d.25th Jan 1943) My great grandfather James Gray was Chief Steward on the SS Lackenby which was singled out and hit by two torpedoes sent from a German U-boat. All crew went down with the ship south of Cape Farewell. James Gray left behind his wife and young daughter.

Able Sea. Archie "Ben" Phipps SS Lackenby (d.25th Jan 1943) Archie (Ben) Phipps died aged 23.
He was born in Jarrow 1919, the Son of Fred and Williamina Phipps of 92 Black Road, Hebburn
He is commemorated on the WW2 Roll of Honour Plaque in the entrance of Jarrow Town Hall and on the Tower Hill Memorial.

Ord Sea. Thomas Mullen SS Lackenby (d.23rd Jan 1943) Thomas Mullen was born in Jarrow 1923, the son of Thomas and Norah Mullen (nee Gibbons) of 172 High Street, Jarrow.
He died, age 19, on the 23rd January 1943, when his ship SS Lackenby was torpedoed by U-624. All ships company were lost.
He is remembered on the Tower Hill Memorial
and on the WW2 Roll of Honour Plaque in the entrance of Jarrow Town Hall.

Able Sea. William John Harvey SS Lackenby (d.25th Jan 1943) William Harvey died aged 25, born in Hebburn in 1917 he was the son of William John and Wilhelmina Turner Harvey (nee McAulay) of 14 Morpeth Avenue, Jarrow.
John is remembered on the Tower Hill Memorial and is commemorated on the WW2 Roll of Honour Plaque in the entrance of Jarrow Town Hall.

Able.Sea. Robert Fox SS Lackenby (d.25th Jan 1943) Robert Fox who died aged 22 was born in Jarrow in 1920. He was the son of Patrick and Ellen Fox (nee Gibbons) of 14 Knight Street Jarrow.
Robert is remembered on the Tower Hill Memorial and is commemorated on the WW2 Roll of Honour Plaque in the entrance of Jarrow Town Hall.

Daniel Flanagan SS Lackenby (d.25th Jan 1943) Daniel Flanagan who died aged 22 was born in Jarrow in 1920. He was the son of Owen and Marion D. Flanagan (nee Fenwick) of 35 James Street Jarrow
Daniel is remembered on the Tower Hill Memorial and is commemorated on the WW2 Roll of Honour Plaque in the entrance of Jarrow Town Hall.

Frmn. Jacob Brunton Errington SS Lackenby (d.25th Jan 1943) J B Errington died aged 37, when teh SS Lacenby was sunk. He was born in Tynemouth in 1905, the son of George and Jane Errington of 26 Walter Street Jarrow.
He is remembered on the Tower Hill Memorial and is commemorated on the WW2 Roll of Honour Plaque in the entrance of Jarrow Town Hall.
