29th May 1943 MV Hopetarn lost MV Hopetarn was a British Cargo Motor vessel of 5,231 tons built in 1939. On the 29th May 1943 when on route from Calcutta & Colombo for Durban, Table Bay & UK carrying 9,000 tons of General Cargo she was torpedoed by U-198 and sunk. 1 crew POW, 7 crew lost from a total crew of 44

App. John George Wilson MV Hopetarn George Wilson was an Apprentice serving aboard the M.V. Hopetarn on 29th May 1943 when the vessel was torpedoed by German U Boat U-198.
As the vessel sank and the crew manned the lifeboats, George ran back on board to gather radio equipment that was later used to enable their rescue.
As a result of his actions, George's name was published in the London Gazette: "By the King's Order the name of John George Wilson was published in the London Gazette on 8th February, 1944, as commended for brave conduct in the Merchant Navy. I am charged to record His Majesty's high appreciation of the service rendered.
Signed Winston Churchill, Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury."

Thomas Aspel M.V. Hopetarn (d.29th May 1943) Thomas Aspell was a Junior Engineer Officer on the M.V. Hopetarn (Newcastle-on-Tyne) serving with the Merchant Navy. He was aged 21 when he died 29th May 1943. Thomas is Commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial.
