Ord.Tel. Charles Henry Farmer HMS Scotia

Sorry, but I have but no stories to tell. Charlie Farmer passed away in 2020 and whilst searching through some old papers I came across his Service Record. It shows that he served briefly aboard HMS Scotia from 19th of June 1943 until 11th of November 1943 before moving on to HMS Mercury.

Clive Farmer

Tel. Geoffrey Richard "Knocker" White HMS Glasgow

My father, Geoffrey White, joined the Royal Navy in May 1939 as a sixteen year old Boy Second Class. His first sea going appointment was as an Ordinary Telegraphist on HMS Glasgow on 30th of October 1940. Serving on her in the Mediterranean (where she was torpedoed at Souda Bay) and on convoy escort duties in the Indian Ocean. He left her at New York in June 1942 when the Glasgow underwent major repairs.

He was subsequently involved in Operation Torch and its aftermath with bases at HMS Hannibal, HMS Byrsa, HMS Elissa (Augusta) until 19th of November 1944 when he returned to a UK based shore appointment at HMS Mercury as a Leading Telegraphist. He remained in the Royal Navy until retirement as a Chief Radio Supervisor on 16th of May 1968.

Richard White

CPO. Harry Norman Lovelace MID. HMS Nelson

Harry Lovelace joined the Royal Navy as boy sailor on 19th of September 1917 He served on HMS Queen Elizabeth (Beatty's flagship) at time of German surrender as Telegraphist. He was given the honour, as youngest telegraphist in the Fleet, of taking the notice of German surrender from telegraph office to the Bridge. Harry was posted to HMS Nelson on 3rd of September 1938 serving in the Atlantic and the Med. He was Mentioned in Despatches, published in theLondon Gazette 11th of June 1942, LG 35586 page 2511, following torpedo attack on Operation Halberd. He returned to U.K. with his damaged ship and was posted to HMS Mercury 21st of May 1942, demobilised at cessation of hostilities and worked as scientific officer at UW weapons Portsdown and Hambrook House.

Tel. Robert Henry Chick HMS Stonecrop

Robert Chick seems to have spent almost his entire war (December 1940 to until discharged February 1946) on the Corvette HMS Stonecrop. Only other ships mentioned in service record are: Royal Arthur, Drake, Eaglet, Mercury, Mayina and Lanka which are all shore bases. He started as a cadet in Merchant Navy 16/02/39 on SS Harberton.

Coder Gilbert Carr HMS Scotia

My father, Gilbert Carr, volunteered for the Royal Navy in August 1944 days after his 18th birthday. He attended HMS Royal Arthur, Duke and Cabbala which were shorebased establishments, Cabbala being a signal school.

He then served on HMS Scotia, Mercury, aircraft carrier Trouncer, and Highflyer and was released to shore class A from Mercury in February 1947.

He told us once that he volunteered to man a rowing boat to rescue people from a ship which was on fire. Sadly, I never asked him more about it or got information about the burning ship. I am trying to trace more about this. He died some years ago, as did my mum so no-one left to ask.

If anyone can shed any light, or was on board any of the named vessels, I would love to hear their stories.

Sig. Donald Norton HMS Scotia

Donald Norton, my grandad, was a miner after the war and became foreman of props at Walkden Yard. I was going through his paperwork when I found his discharge papers. HMS Collingwood was his first ship. I believe he was a signalman and was also stationed at HMS Mercury and HMS Scotia, plus three more, but I am unable to read the names of these.

Paul Cooper

Tel. John Harry Cushing HMS Nelson

Our Dad, John Harry Cushing, joined the Royal Navy on the 23rd March 1943 at the age of seventeen and a half and was trained at HMS Royal Arthur, HMS Cressy, HMS Mercury and HMS Vicas as an ordinary Telegrapher. He joined HMS Nelson in December 1943.

He remained on the Nelson until September 1945. Following the Japanese surrender in Singapore, we think he was transferred to the mine sweeper, HMS Friendship, and was released to shore on the 17th September 1946. Dad died in Swanage in May 1987. Apart from his war service medals we think we have his Navy Knife, which is inscribed 'Cunnery Lockspike Bosum'.

Sig. Reginald Gould HMS Pembroke

I have recently been given a list of ships my father was on during WW2 and I have been unable to find a lot of them in the records on line. As he passed away 7 years ago I am unable to ask him.

This has always been a great fascination to me and I want to make some record of his times to pass on to future generations .. so I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction where to find more information? The only one I have really found alot about is the Royal Arthur .. the others are

  • Scotia Mercury
  • Fox
  • Europa
  • Oystermouth Castle
  • Prophet
  • Pembroke
