Cmdr(E) William John Shute HMS Caledonia

I am researching the life of Cmdr John Shute (E) for his grandsons and am trying to find out to find out about his time on HMS Caledonia and then his time at Rosyth Dockyard. Also his award of the OBE. I believe he was Assistant to the Engineering Manager. Can anyone help?

John Keeling

Ord.Sea. John George Chisholm HMS Bonaventure (d.31st Mar 1941)

My cousin, Jackie Chisholm, was an only child and volunteered 14 March 1938, aged 16, unbeknownst to his parents. His training was aboard the HMS Caledonia at Rosyth, and after serving as a Boy 1 on board the Drake and Hermes, he joined the Bonaventure in May 1940 as an Ordinary Seaman.

The Bonaventure was torpedoed and sunk south of Crete on 31st March 1941 with many lives lost. Jackie's name is on Plymouth Naval War Memorial on Plymouth Hoe, dedicated to sailors who have been lost at sea. He was 19 years old when he died.

Sue Holland

Sto1 Georgie "Spike" Donovan HMS Pembroke

Dad was in the Royal Navy from 22 Nov 1938-8 June 1949 list of ships he served on in order of service:
  • HMSPembroke
  • HMS Foxhound (H69)
  • HMS Mauritius(80)
  • HMS Caledonia (D53)
  • HMS Volunteer(D71)
  • HMS Lanka
  • HMS Waldegrave(k579)
  • HMS Dido
  • HMS Triumph

He served on a few more but I had trouble in deciphering dad's certificate of service records. He never spoke about the war during his lifetime but having received a copy of his war records recently and reading about his dangerous engagements makes you fill proud.
