World War 2 Two II WW2 WWII

HMTS Neuralia

The Neuralia was built by Barclay Curle & Co. at Glasgow and was launched on 12th September 1912 to carry 128 First Class and 98 Second Class passengers on the London to Calcutta Service for British India. During the Great War she served as a Hospital Ship. In the summer of 1932 The Neuralia inaugurated the school cruises to the Baltic and Norwegian Fjords.
At the start of the Second World War, Neuralia became a troop ship. She transported Australian to the Eastern Mediterranean to guard the Suez Canal, then sailed for Cyprus to pick up Cypriot refugees. She then sailed for Dakar to pick up French Colonial troops bound for France, but this voyage was interupted when France capitulated and the troops were returned to Dakar. The Neuralia then transported refugees from Europe to Jamaica.

In 1941 the Neuralia transported troops to Bombay and Rangoon, and then assisted at the retreat from Burma, carrying refugees from Rangoon and the Andamen Islands across the Bay of Bengal. She spent 1943 and early 1944 in the Far East and the Mediterranean ferrying troops. In April 1944 she returned to Glasgow for refit prior to the invasion of Europe. Then sailed for the port of London joining many other ships in preparation for D-Day. On the morning of the 6th Neuralia brought troops to the beaches of Utah and Omaha, making fourteen round trips carrying a total of 27, 055 Officers and men of the Allied Army.

On the 1st May 1945 whilst en-route Split, Yugoslavia to Taranto to pick up German Prisoners of War she was mined off Southern Italy and sank 3.5 hours later with the loss of four lives.
