World War 2 Two II WW2 WWII

Stalag 5A was situated on the southern edge of Ludwigsburg in Germany, on the site of a former German military installation. The red brick stables that had once been used for cavalry horses were converted to barracks to house prisoners in October, 1939. Additional wooden barracks were also constructed in the grounds.

The first POW's held here were Polish prisoners taken captive during the German invasion of Poland in May 1940 they were joined by Belgian, Dutch and French prisoners from the Battle of France and British prisoners captured at Dunkirk. From 1941 Soviet prisoners began to arrive, they were kept in separate enclosures and received much harsher treatment with thousands dying of malnutrition and disease. The first American prisoners arrived after the Normandy Landings in 1944.

Most of the POW's lived in smaller work camps in the surrounding area. The camp was evacuated on the evening of the 1st April 1945 as the Allied advance drew near. POW's then became part of a huge forced march across southern Germany.

After the end of the war thousands of Displaced Persons, mostly Poles were housed in the camp.

Wilfred Thomas Black Watch

I am looking for any one who can help tell me anything about Stalag Va, my father, Wilfred Thomas was a prisoner there,he was in the blackwatch. I have photos of him there and letters. I would also like to know if there are any trips to this camp.

Pte. James Riley West Yorkshire Regiment

My Dad, James Riley, was taken prisioner at Dunkerque and to the best of our knowledge was sent to Stalag 5 in the Black Forest. We were some of the lucky ones who had their father returned to give us more years of happiness.
