World War 2 Two II WW2 WWII

Bergen-Belsen Concentration Camp was situated in Lower Saxony in northwestern Germany, southwest of the town of Bergen. Originally established in 1939 as a prison camp, it became Stalag X1C prisoner of war camp. In 1943 the site became a concentration camp on the orders of Heinrich Himmler, where Jewish prisoners were held. An estimated 50,000 Russian prisoners of war and a further 50,000 inmates died in the camp.

The camp was liberated on the 15 th of April 1945 by the British 11th Armoured Division, who found 60,000 prisoners inside.
