5043251 Lt. Teddy G. Shaw US Army Air Force 748 Squadron (d.24th Aug 1944) My uncle, Lt. Teddy G. Shaw was a B-17 pilot with the 748th sqdrn. He and
his crew were lost on 24 August 1944. His mission summary is below along
with the names of his crew. I would like to one day visit England to see
where he was stationed. Unfortunately I never knew him, but recently
discover his voice via a recording he sent my grandmother just before
departing for England.
Mission No. 112, August 24, 1944, Target - Weimar
The target for the 457th on this date was manufacturing facilities about
five miles west of Weimar, Germany which was believed to be making V-2
rocket bombs. A nearby barracks of the Geatapo was also a target. The group
put up 36 planes. One plane, s/n 42-09755, left the formation and was not
seen again. Over the target another plane, s/n 42-97571, was hit by flak and lost and four others were badly damaged. The target was clearly visible as the squadrons bombed in trail. The target was left a smoking, burning ruin. No fighers nor flak were encountered on the way home.
This plane s/n 42-97558, named "Tis Me Sugar," and piloted by Lt Teddy G
Shaw, left the formation with no apparent problem. One report says that
there were no fighters or flak and the plane simply left the formation and
was not seen again. Another reports that he was hit by a lone jet fighter
plane, lost two engines, went into a spin and later exploded at a lower
altitude.
