My Great Grandfather served in the 8th army from 1940 onwards.
He was Battery Sergeant Major Albert Hole, from Swansea South Wales. He served in Italy and against Rommel in the dessert.
He was mentioned in despatches and wore the oak leaf because of this.
He came home in 1944 after being shot in the leg.
He brought home with him a very old pipe which was given to him by the family he stayed with in italy they even built hima seperate wing on the side of the house for hime to stay in.
