Pte. Patrick Joseph Murray
British Army 2nd Battalion Rifle Brigade
from:Waterford, Ireland
Patrick Murray served in the North African and Italian campaigns. He became his unit's radio operator after recovering the radio from a fallen comrade. He put the radio on his back and carried it around for the rest of the war. He always said it was one of the most silliest things he did because he then became a target for any snipers.
He was demobed after the War and became a postal worker in West Ham in East London. Years later a VIP (a mayor I think) visited his office and it was his former officer who made him the radio operator.
