Tpr. George David "Smudge" Cameron-Smith

British Army Royal Armoured Corps

George Cameron-Smith was my father in law and over the years he told me about his time in the regiment and 6th Armoured Division, sometimes humorous sometimes sombre laced with grit and determination. His first battle was with the regiment at the Kesserine Pass from there all along the top of Tunisia and North Africa. The path took them into and along the Atlas mountains where he said he went from frying an egg on the tank to it freezing. He was on Operation Huskey and there on to Italy he used to laugh at Churchils description of the soft under belly of Eeurope. He fought on most of the battles that the regiment went through getting wounded at Casino. He said about the German tanks they werent the problem it was the dreaded 88 well camoflaged gun every time. He went up to Yugoslavian border then onto Isreal for the troubles there. He lost 3 tanks under him which he described in humorous detail but you could see the anguish well hidden. I used to say to him you must have been a nutter getting back into another tank he used to just shrugg and say you just did it there was a job to do and you got on with it, mmmm his reply sometime was he wouldn't do my job in the marines as it scared him to death. I was very honoured to know Trooper G. D. Cameron Smith as a friend and a fellow soldier, they broke the mould when they made his type long will they be missed. God bless them all .
