Harry Appleby was born in Gateshead in 1920. He entered the Royal Marines on 10 January 1938 at Newcastle upon Tyne and was initially posted to Deal. He joined the Portsmouth Division on 28th of September 1938 and was transferred to Plymouth Division on 23 March 1939. He joined HMS Repulse on 28th of July 1939 and returned to Portsmouth Division on 23rd of August 1939 where he remained on the Home Based Ledger (Alexandria) until 31st December 1940 when he transferred once again to Plymouth Division. He joined HMS Prince of Wales on 21st of March 1941 and was invalided off (owing to illness) on 27th of May from where he went to Plymouth Division and was discharged physically unfit on 6th of October 1941.
