Vincent Howard Cope Hanwell
British Army
from:Barnsley
My grandfather, Vincent Hanwell, was on board The Lancastria. He was one of the last aboard and I believe he was on deck as the planes attacked.
As the ship sank he jumped overboard and was able to find a deck chair which he clung on to till he could be rescued. He shared the deck chair with another man I believe. When he finally arrived home his hair had turned white from the shock.
