Cpl. John Donald "Lofty" Wightman

Royal Air Force 70 Wing

from:New Zealand

I was a radar mechanic at RAF Whale Head, Orkney for eighteen months in 1943/44. Our plots were passed to the filter room in Scotland via our twin at Netherbutton. In spite of the isolation it was a happy station and we enjoyed unlimited butter, eggs and lobsters, purchased from the local crofters and fishermen. We also had a home-brew camp cinema with a generous supply of films from the comforts organisations.
