230909 Gdsm. Christopher Thomas Elijah Bassett British Army Grenadier Guards from:Tolworth, Surrey Our dad, Christopher Bassett was 18 when he was sent to war. He was a Grenadier Guard, and he was in the Battle of Anzio. He was taken POW three times during the war, and one of those times he was in Stalag X1A. He wasn't there for liberation day as he had managed to escape from the camp before that day. After the war, he suffered with his nerves for the rest of his life and would often relive the experiences by telling us his stories frequently. He did see and experience some awful things as did so many others. He was understandably deeply affected by the experience. He died in 2008 at the age of 86.
