Richard Morton
British Army Royal Artillery
My father, Richard Morton, was on duty in an anti-aircraft battery, stationed in a 3-sided building to disguise their location on the east coast of England, the date of which I am not aware. However, he told this story to me on several occasions and met a fellow soldier who corroborated this story. He said on a night-time watch the alarm sounded and the officer in charge told all gunners to rotate their guns to point at the beach and to continue firing until ammunition had been expended. As a result, my father, who was off duty, was scrambled without being able to get fully kitted up, and without ear defenders. Consequently, in the morning after several hours firing at the beaches below their position, my father and many of his colleagues were deaf, my father's deafness was permanent. When light came up they were all astonished to see the bodies of German soldiers being bulldozed into trucks and taken away. Can anyone tell me more about this story, and perhaps give me details of the location or clear up any of the facts?
