John Carey

British Army Royal Engineers

from:Livingston

My great grandfather John Carey was a regular soldier and served with the Royal Engineers before 1939 and then up to 1945. He was at Dunkirk and family legend has it that the boat that was bringing him home sank and he swam the last part of the trip. Following this, he was sent to North Africa with the 8th Army, then served in Italy until the end of the war. As a child, I vividly remember seeing the wound to his arm and stories of his friends and fighting the Germans.
