Bbdr. Samuel Scorer

British Army 1st Maritime Rgt. Royal Artillery

My father, Samuel Scorer, was a bombardier in the 1st Maritime Regiment, Royal Artillery, in charge of the anti-aircraft gunners on HMS Aldersdale (a Fleet oiler). He told me that they were hit by an aerial torpedo which split the engine's cylinder block so that HMS Aldersdale was disabled but not sinking. They were all taken off by rescue ship and eventually reached Archangel. Luckly the cargo of fuel oil had all been given up to the escort when the attack came.
