Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve 97 Squadron

(d.9th July 1943)

On 3 December 2000 I initiated the erection of a memorial to the crew of Lancaster ED 923 OF-V of 97 squadron. The aircraft was shot by LT Erlinghagen and crashed at the village of Bassenge (Belgium). The crew were: F/O R B D Palmer, F/O Ramesh C Datta, Sgts D Cameron, A R Harris, D C H Holdint, C V King and W Stephens. They all died in the crash and rest at the War Cemetery at Heverlee near Leuven.

Lt Erlinghagen was shot down a month later and crashed at Kerniel, Belgium, a few miles from the crash location of his victims a month earlier.
