211245 Roy Hayward Burma star British Army Chindits Royal Army Service Corps from:Swindon My grandad, Roy Hayward, never really spoke of the War in Burma. My information is limited. I knew he was with the Royal Army Service Corps and was based in North Africa (Egypt) around 1942/43. He was then sent to Singapore but en route the Japanese had captured Singapore so they were diverted to India. It was here that he was made a Chindit under Orde Wingates command and fought in Burma on Operation Longcloth. I believe it was part of his job to retrieve air dropped supplies successfully. Unfortunatly, for him, his 4 year service came up and he was sent back to india while in Burma. I say unforunatly because he really wanted to carry on to Mandalay with his boys. My Nan told me that before the mules made the journey with the troops on those long journeys by foot that they had their voice boxes surgically removed so as not to be detected by the Japanese. If anyone has any information on my grandad or his unit, I would love to hear about it. I really wish I had learnt more from him while he was alive. He sadly died last year aged 91.
