Stories from 29th June 1944

Sgt. Ronald Paul Lucas. Royal Air Force rafvr2, 76 Squadron. (d.29th June 1944)

Sergeant Ronald Paul Lucas, RAFVR, an Air Gunner of 76 Squadron which flew Halifax bombers at the time of his death, 29 June 1944. His parents were Harry and Ruby Lucas of Blackburn. As a Scouting Archivist I have been given an historic pictorial record of a defunct Blackburn Scout Group. One of the collections consists of photographs of past Boy Scouts from the Group who went off to fight in WW2 which includes Ronald's photograph.

Ray Fairwood

Pte. William Francis Turner. British Army, 1st Btn Dorsetshire Regiment. (d.29th June 1944)

Uncle Bill Turner (dad's brother) was killed on D-Day. He was hit in the back, leg and shoulder and a bullet passed through his wallet. He was buried in a hospital cemetery 13.5 miles west of Caen and is remembered in the Bayeaux war cemetery. Major Dartnall fought with him and was also hit by shrapnel. In his letter to grandma he stated that Bill was a credit to his unit and to any British family. We also have the letter of condolence from the King

Sylvia Turner

F/O. Wilfred Glennie Airs. Royal Air Force, 7 Squadron. (d.29th June 1944)

Flying Officer Bill Airs became one of the top navigators in the Royal Air Force with the famous Pathfinders Squadron who in Lancasters (and Mosquitoes) led the bomber fleets to the correct target and also had to circle it dropping flares to ensure all the fleet found it. The death rate was 1 in 6 for Pathfinders crews but he successfully completed his tour of duty of 70 missions and could have taken a safer training role.

But he shrugged off his young pregnant wife's fears and volunteered for another 70 missions though he told my father that "every time I take off I just wonder if it's my last op". Cruelly, aged 29, on 29th June 1944 and their wedding date was the 29th, his flight was shot down and he was killed over the Pas de Calais, France, over a V1 rocket base.

Gordon Airs

F/O. Wilfred Airs. Royal Air Force, 7 Squadron. (d.29th June 1944)

Wilfred Airs was my wife's father and we do know that he was lost during a raid in the Pas-de-Calais during late May 1944 or late June 1944. He was a navigator on one 7 Sqdrn's Lancasters.

Editor's Note: Wilfred was lost on the 29th of June 1944 and is remembered on the Runnymede Memorial.

Douglas Young

Pte. John Welsh. British Army, 1st Btn. South Lancashire Regiment. (d.29th June 1944)

My great uncle John Welsh was in the 1st Battalion, South Lancashire Regiment. He served during the D-day invasion and was just 22 years old. His birthday was on D-day and he survived until the 29th of June 1944 when he died from wounds. He is buried at Hermanville War Cemetery, France. I have no photos of him and no first grave marker. If anyone has any information on this soldier or a photo of him, it would be gratefully appreciated.

Glyn Welsh

Can you help us to add to our records?

The names and stories on this website have been submitted by their relatives and friends. If your relations are not listed please add their names so that others can read about them

Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?

If so please let us know.

Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.

Celebrate your own Family History

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
