Stories from 29th July 1944

Private Robert Edgar McLetchie. Army, 1st Btn. Highland Light Infantry. (d.29th Jul 1944)

I would really like to find out more about my Uncle Robert Edgar McLetchie who, my Father never got over losing during the second world war. If anyone should know how and where he died I would be very grateful to hear from them. He is buried in the Bayeux War Cemetry

Neville Rollinson Bradshaw. Royal Air Force, 103 Squadron. (d.29th July 1944)

Neville Rollinson Bradshaw was my cousin, my last memory of him was at my Mother's house just before he went off on his last trip, when I was be two. I have found today a letter from his sister who has now passed away, saying that he was on a bombing raid to Stuttgart. They went over the target, were still airbourne, but loosing altitude and hoped to reach home, unfortunately they didn't clear the mountains and hit a power line over the Vosche Mountains and the plane blow up. They are buried in a mass grave in the village of Vosche (hope that is how you spell it). My cousin was told that it was tendered by the village.

It was their last trip of the tour and Neville was to be best man at the Bomb aimer's wedding. The poor bride was all dressed up when the telegram arrived.

Editor's Note:

The crew were:

  • F/O J.B.Moss
  • Sgt R.R.Hardey
  • F/O M.R.F.Harvey
  • F/S S.J.Honour
  • Sgt N.Bradshaw
  • Sgt C.B.Osborne
  • Sgt A.W.Crooke
They are buried at Charmes (Vosges) in the town's Essegney Military cemetery.

Sgt. Harold Gordon "Nick" Carter. Royal Air Force, 514 Squadron. (d.29th July 1944)

I am trying to find out as much information as possible about my father, Harold Carter, known as Nick. I was just 2 years old when he was killed in action. My Mother, who is now deceased, told me little about him and his wartime exploits. If any one can help me I would be most grateful.

Sgt. Derek Carrott. Royal Canadian Air Force, 405th Squadron. (d.29th July 1944)

My father's cousin, Derek Carrott served as a sergeant and flight engineer, on Lancaster mkIII LQ-M JB707 in 405 squadron. His Lancaster went down on night of 28th/29th July 1944 after a raid on Hamburg. My Dad adored his older cousin and Derek was just 18 when lost, both of them being pranksters in their youth according to Derek's sister [now 85] and Derek was a family hero. Not the least because my Dad worshipped his cousin and would have tears in his eyes when telling me and my sister about his cousin Derek, some forty years later.

Derek's log book simply states Missing Presumed Killed for the fateful raid. We now know that his Lancaster went down in Ring Kobing Fjord off the Danish coast and although Derek was never found, his crew member Colin Blyth was found on the beach nearby and buried with full military honours by the Germans at Haurvig cemetery in Denmark. Until her dying day in the nineteen seventies, his mother, my great aunt Jessie hoped and prayed that Derek had baled out, been captured and then escaped to Switzerland perhaps and would eventually return safely. The wishes of thousands of mothers no doubt?

RIP Derek, probably still ling with the wreckage of his Lancaster and still with his crew I expect. You are a hero to us and never forgotten I hope my Dad and you are enjoying your pranks once again?

Sgt. Raymond Thomas Stephen. Royal Air Force, 15 Squadron. (d.29th July 1944)

I am not related to Raymond Stephen but came across the story when his 'caterpillar club' badge was for sale at a local Antiques Centre. On the evening of 25th April 1942, Short Stirling W7514 of 15 Squadron, took off from RAF Wyton, Cambridgeshire, on a mine-laying operation. The crew were:
  • Pilot Officer Allan B. Bateman
  • Flying Officer J.E.M. Conran
  • Pilot Officer Allan H.H. Young
  • Sergeant Raymond Thomas Stephen
  • Sergeant Ronald R. Lawson
  • Sergeant Ronald A.J. Skinner
  • Sergeant David J. East
  • Sergeant Gordon H. Surridge

As the aircraft was outbound flying over Jylland, Denmark, it was attacked by a Messerchmidt BF110C-2 of 5./NGJ 3. Sergeant David East was killed during the attack and Sergeant Surridge was severely wounded in the abdomen and leg. A fire started in one wing and the order was given to abandon the aircraft. Shortly after the crew parachuted out, the aircraft exploded and crashed to the ground near Kravlund at 0115 hours.

Sergeants Stephen and Skinner stayed at large until the 28th April. They approached a farm at 0200 hours asking for food and a place to sleep. They were given food and allowed to sleep in the stable. A short while later, the police arrived and, they were taken to Tonder, where they were handed over to the German military. The injured Sergeant Surridge landed by parachute, at a farm at Pebersmark. He was taken by ambulance to hospital at Tonder, but died the following day. Both he and Sergeant East, whose body was recovered from the wreck are buried in Aabenraa cemetery. Flying Officer Conran, who had twisted his leg upon landing, and Sergeant Lawson, who was unhurt, were found by the Danish Police, near Rens. Pilot Officer Bateman, who had been hit in the toe by a bullet, was also collected by the Danish Police and taken to Tonder. Pilot Officer Young had been hit twice in his right leg, by machine gun bullets, and was taken by ambulance to Tonder hospital.

They were all sent to POW camps as follows:

  • Conran – Stalag Luft I Barth and later Stalg Luft III Sagan
  • Bateman – Stalag IXC Muhlhausen and later Stalag Luft III Sagan
  • Lason, Skinner, Young and Stephen – Stalag Luft III Sagan. Skinner and Stephen later transferred to Stalag Luft VI Heydekrug.

On 29th July 1944, whilst at Stalag Luft IV Gross Tychow, Sergeant Raymond Stephen was killed when he was struck by lightning.

An account of the incident and some photographs can be found at http://www.flensted.eu.com/194211.shtml

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
