Stories from 28th May 1943

F/O Charles Harrison. Royal Air Force, 460 Squadron. (d.28th May 1943)

Charles Harrison was my mum's brother and volunteered to join up in 1940. He sailed on the Queen Mary to America where he did his pilot training. On returning home he was posted to Binbrook and flew Lancaster Bombers. We believe his last mission was in 1943, when he flew to Essen and that on the way home, his Lancaster was attacked by German fighters. Charlie and four of his crew were killed and are buried in Uden, Holland.

After the war, Charlie's family was visited by one of the Australian crew members who escaped the crash and was captured. He said that when their aircraft was hit, Charlie gave the order to jump, but remained in the aircraft to check if the rear gunner was OK. Apparently, when Charles finally jumped, his parachute opened but the explosion of the aircraft killed him. When the crewman found Charlie, he was dead, but didn't have a mark on him.

My mum has wondered over the years if he told them this out of kindness, or if it was really true. We would love to learn more. Charlie would have been 21, the month after he died.

Sgt. Kenneth Graham Chilver. Royal Canadian Air Force, 428 Sqd.. (d.28th May 1943)

Kenneth Chilver, is a distant relative who has captured my imagination, probably because information is not easy to come by. He was the son of Benjamin and Lily Chilver, husband of Gwennie Chilver, of Middlesbrough, Yorkshire. He was lost on the 28th of May 1943 whilst flying with 428 (RCAF) Squadron when he was 24 years old. He has no known grave and is remembered on the Runnymede Memorial. The information I have is from the back of a photo and states that he died on the Essue Raid. The Essue is unclear but as far as I can tell this is what it says. Unfortunately this is the only info I have and hope that someone will be able to help me find out more.

Editors Note: The raid on the 28th of May 1943 was to Essen.

F/O. Robert Ryland Reid. Royal Air Force, 115 Sdqn. . (d.28th May 1943)

Robert Reid was known as Roy to the family and was married to Elizabeth. I do not know much as his family did not talk about him. He was a rear gunner in, I think, a Lancaster. I am trying to find out more about him until his death in May 1943.

F/O David Stuart Williams. Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, 115 Sqdn.. (d.28th May 1943)

F/O Williams was killed over Essen, Germany on 28th May 1943.

Bill Ross

Pte. George Henry Beale. Australian Imperial Force, 2/20th Btn. Australian Infantry. (d.28th May 1943)

George Beale was captured at the fall of Singapore with his brother, Fred. They were sent to Naoetsu, Japan on a hell-ship. Sadly, George did not survive the camp and is buried in Yokohama War Cemetery, Aus. Sec. E.A.3. Fred died in 1992.

Cpl. S. G. Schoeman. South African Forces, Corps of Military Police. (d.28th May 1945)

Corporal Schoeman was the Son of Gideon J. H, Schoeman and Sara J. Schoeman; husband of S. C. Schoeman, of Koedoesfontein. He was 52 and is buried in the Al Kleiner Farm Burial Ground, Potchefstroom, North West, South Africa

AB William Pert. Royal Navy, SS Empire Scott. (d.28th May 1943)

William Pert served in the Royal Navy aboard HMS President III and the SS Empire Scott in WW2. He died 28th of May 1944 aged 26 years and is buried Archangel Allied Cemetery in Russia. Son of George and Mary Helen Pert, of Montrose, Angus.

Elaine Robertson

Able Sea. William Pert. Royal Navy, SS Empire Scott. (d.28th May 1943)

William Pert served on the SS Empire Scott. The SS Empire Scott was part of Convoy JW53 which sailed on 15th of February 1943 from Loch Ewe, Scotland to Murmansk, Russia along with 28 other supply vessels and a number of naval escorts. The ship arrived safely in Murmansk but was then blockaded in Russian waters for most of the rest of the year along with other Allied supply ships. It was finally able to depart from Archangel on 26th of November 1943.

Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.

Celebrate your own Family History

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
