Uncle Albert Laking was in Montgomery's veritable plan to take the bridges at Schaddenoff.

The plan was to take the bridge and move on to out flank the Germans , unfortunately they met fierce resistance from the newly formed German regiment consisting of paratroopers, engineers and infantry. The East Yorkshire took the bridge and after several counter attacks managed to hold on until relief and supplies arrived. The casualty count was very high including Albert. After the battle the bridge was baptised "Yorkshire Bridge".

Uncle Albert is interred in the Reichswald Forest War Cemetery.

Pte Isaac Stewart. British Army, 7th Battalion Seaforth Highlanders. (d.27 February 1945)

My family has undertaken research into their family tree in recent years. My mum and her brothers discovered an uncle who they had never even heard of - Private Isaac Stewart. Our research has found that he was killed by a US air strike on 27 February 1945 whilst being held as POW and was aged only 20 years old. It feels quite sad that his memory has been buried for so many years but now he has a proper place of remembrance in our family.

Fiona Morrow

Arthur was captured in 1940 at Dunkirk and was buried on Tuesday, 27th of February 1945, Age 21 in the Berlin 1939-1945 War Cemetery. His father Herbert, who was in the Pioneer Corps, died in 1940 aboard the SS Lancastria a troop ship evacuatiing soldiers from France. He was my father's half brother but sadly they never knew each other.

Tpr. George Groat. British Army, 116th (9th Btn. The Gordon Highlanders) Regiment Royal Armoured Corps. (d.27th Feb 1945)

In the process of researching my family tree, my father mentioned about an uncle that was killed in WW2. My dad mentioned something about his tank being hit with an anti tank round and killing him. Celebrate your own Family History

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
