Stories from 27th February 1942

Frank Chapman. Royal Navy, HMS Electra. (d.27th Feb 1942)

My Mother's first husband went down in the Battle of Java with HMS Electra. His name was Frank Chapman - Able Seaman. We understand that he was in the torpedo room at the time of the battle and that he was probably killed instantly. He was only 21 and he left behind him a loving wife and a child of 12 months.

My sister is now 63 and would love to hear anything aobut the Electra. We also know of the niece of the Captain of HMS Electra.

If anyone has any information to add, we would love to hear from you. Are any survivors of HMS Electra still alive? It would be great to hear from them.

Debbie Gaston

Able Seaman. Robert Fraser. Royal Navy, HMS Electra. (d.27th Feb 1942)

In Memory of Able Seaman Robert Fraser

C/JX 190268, H.M.S. Electra, Royal Navy who died age 22

on 27 February 1942

Son of Peter Mackie Fraser and Frances Mary Fraser; husband of Winifred Joyce Fraser, of Brockley, London.

Father of Malcolm Robert Fraser (deceased), Grandfather to Ian Robert Fraser and Great-Grandfather to Vincent Robert Fraser.

My Grandfather, Robert Fraser, able seaman, was presumed killed in the 'Battle of the Java Sea'.

The crew's names can be seen at the Chatham Maritime Memorial, Chatham, Kent, I recently took my son to see his great grandfathers name, emotional. If any one has any information please contact me.

Ian Robert Fraser

Lt. Eric Coale. Royal Navy, HMS Electra. (d.27th Feb 1942)

I have just inherited my Great Uncles Naval sword, medals, paperwork and photos, and I was wondering if you have any information about him or his crew. I have a book which mentions him.

Eric Coale, Age 23, Rank Lieutenant, Died 27 February at the battle of Java.

Richard Eric Coale

Sgt. wilfred Whittam. Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve , 77 Squadron. (d.27th Feb 1942)

My grandfather was stationed at RAF Leeming. His name was Wilfred Whittam and he was a sergeant in the RAF Volunteer Reserve working as an air gunner/wireless operator on Whitley aircraft. He was killed in action on February 27th 1942 and is buried in Driesum Churchyard in the Netherlands.

Sarah Whittam-Howsam

PO. Charles Richard Smith. Royal Navy, HMS Electra. (d.27th Feb 1942)

My uncle, Charles Richard Smith, Petty Officer (Supply) was on board HMS Electra when it went down. Unfortunately, he died that day aged 27 years. He was born in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. My Grandmother had a wooden screen made and donated it to the local church in his memory.

Lynne Halford

Sub/Lt. Vyvyan Howard Kelsey. Royal Navy, HMS Talbot. (d.27th Feb 1942)

My Aunt, Margaret Lewin, was engaged to Vyvyan Kelsey. She would have been 12 days short of her 20th birthday when he died. Despite being quite beautiful, she never married. I never knew of her engagement or relationship until after her death in 2011. When I used to ask her why she never married, she would fob me off with some story along the lines of "Oh well, it just never happened". A small tragedy in one of the worst times in human history.

Tom Lewin

Able Sea. David Woodward. Royal Navy, HMS Electra. (d.27th February 1942)

My uncle, David Woodward was born 7th of October 1919 in Boldon Colliery. He was the son of Daniel & Elizabeth Woodward and one of 4 brothers serving in the forces in WW2. David joined the Royal Navy. He had served on several ships during WW2 and had been shipwrecked and rescued on two occasions. His last ship was HMS Electra which was lost during the battle of the Java Sea. David was killed in action on 27th February 1942. He was 23 years old. He is remembered on the Chatham Naval Memorial and in St Nicholas Church in Boldon Colliery.

Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?

If so please let us know.

Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.

Celebrate your own Family History

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
