Stories from 26th August 1944 Sgt. Peter J. Leather. Royal Air Force, 90 Sqd.. (d.26th Aug 1944) My husband's uncle, Sgt Peter J. Leather, flew out of Tuddenham on Operation Kiel on the 26th August 1944 and unfortunately never made it back. He was about 19 at the time. The plane was Lancaster HK604 WP-G. The bodies of three of the crew were found on Sylt but the others have never been found. Sharon Leather Add to this record. F/O James Franklin Baird. Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, 153 Sqdn.. (d.26th August 1944) Does anyone know what happened on F/O J.F.Baird's sortie on 25 or 26 August 1944? He is commemorated on Panel 13, Col. 1 of the Malta Memorial. Audrey Sinden Add to this record. Pte. Carl Melvin "Cully" Johnson. Canadian Army, Seaforth Highlanders of Canada. (d.26th Aug 1944) Cully Johnson, fell in France, 26th of August 1944. Remembered by his family. Carla Johnson Add to this record. Pte Bernard Dagnan. British Army, 5th Battalion South Staffordshire Regiment. (d.26th August 1944) Bernard Dagnan returned home but died of his wounds. His son was also called Bernard and went on to have a successful life and family of his own. Lorraine Sinclair-Evans Add to this record. Sgt. Stuart Martin Parkeshouse Parkes. DSO. RAFVR, 9 Squadron. (d.26th Aug 1944) Stuart Parkes was a pilot of Wellington bombers and was based at Honington in Suffolk. And on the night of 11th January 1941 as part of a 6 member crew took off for a bombing mission to Turin. Aircraft WS- R1224 was forced to land near Miserieux in France and all crew were uninjured however they were all interned. Five of the grew managed to escape and eventually returned to the UK and took place in further operations. Sgt Parkes was promoted to Squadron Leader was killed whilst flying Lancasters on the night of 26th of August 1944. Add to this record.
