Stories from 25th July 1944

F/O Thomas James Middleton. Royal Air Force, 514 Squadron. (d.25th Jul 1944)

Flying Officer Thomas Middleton was my uncle, married to my mother's sister, Kathleen. When I was young my mother and father told me many stories about the war, one of which that Tom was worried about the severe loss of life and that many of the men were not coming back. He warned my aunt that this might happen to him, which it did. I have my aunt's will and in it she mentions him missing presumed killed after a raid over Stuttgart on the night of 24/25 July 1944 but I cannot seem to find any reference to this raid. I have inherited the engagement ring he gave my aunt before the war, they never had any children, they were such a good looking couple.

Editor's Note: The raids which took place that night were a heavy raid on Stuttgart, an attack on the oil depot at Donges and on a flying-bomb site at Feray. Bomber Command lost 25 aircraft that night from the 1088 which took off.

Sgt. Charles James Baynes. Royal Air Force, 103 Squadron. (d.25th July 1944)

Charles James Baynes was my husband James's uncle. We don't know much only that he is the only Commonwealth burial of WW2 at Jouy-Le-Potier Communal Cemetery which is in the Loire area of France.

Flt.Sgt. Robert Craig. Royal Air Force, 50th Squadron. (d.25th July 1944)

My dad's older brother, Robert Craig, was killed in action on the 25th July, 1944 at the age of 19 years. My dad was only 13 years when his big brother was killed. He obviously found it difficult to talk about but he did tell me some things about him. Recently I have been trying to find out more about what happened all those years ago (nearly 70 years). I have discovered that he was a flight engineer on a Lancaster bomber and most of the other crew members were from the Canadian Air Force. They were based in RAF Skellingthorpe, Lincoln.

Unfortunately, all crew members lost their lives on their first mission to bomb an oil refinery in Donges, France. They crashed in Pontchateau, Nothern France and are all buried in a collective grave.

  • P/O C.B.Haaland. RCAF
  • Flt.Sgt. R.Craig RAF
  • Sgt. J.L.Nelson RCAF
  • F/O S.J.Sulliven RCAF
  • Sgt. W.J.B.Doughty RAF
  • Sgt. N. Gronbeck RCAF
  • Sgt. G.F.Finch RCAF

For my dad, who is now deceased, I plan to visit Skellingthorpe next year for the 70th anniversary and later in the year I hope to visit France to pay my respects to my Uncle Robin and all his crew. I don't have any photographs of my Uncle Robin as none have survived. I was wondering if anyone out there met or knew my uncle or any of the crew. Would love to find some photos of the crew and/or 50th Squadron. Do any survive?

F/Lt. George Reynolds was stationed at RAF Mildenhall and on the night of 24/25th July 1944 the aircraft he was piloting, a Lancaster, failed to return from a bombing mission. He and his crew all perished.

During a raid against Donges St.Nazaire Oil Plant Lancaster II PG-E LM643 was shot down by flak North of Montoir-de-Bretagne close to the target. The exact position of the crash is not known, most likely the Lancaster impacts at the Briere more area.
