Stories from 25th August 1943

Spr. George William Orchard. British Army, 287 Field Company Royal Engineers. (d.25th Aug 1943)

George Orchard was my uncle, and enlisted in the Royal Engineers on 16th Jaunary 1941 as a Sapper. After initial training in July 1941 he was posted to the 8th Field Squadron and in August the 287 Field Company.

He was posted to Singapore on 28th October 1941, towards the end of the Malayan campaign, and it was rumored that there's was the last convoy to reach Singapore before its fall, arriving in January 1942. Other records show the 287th fought in Johore and lost 21 other ranks killed in action or died of wounds, eight taken prisoner and imprisoned in Pudu Jail, Kuala Lumpur and at least one missing in action. During the subsequent fighting on Singapore island, the 287th incurred another 5 casualties. Singapore surrended on 15th February 1942, although some members of the armed forces managed to escape the chaos, just before this. Indeed George's Sergeant, made it home, to tell his parents that he had been unable to persuade George to leave with him, as he intended to "stay and fight".

Following surrender, George and numerous other POW's were marched many miles with little food and water to work on the infamous "Burma Railway". Casualties from the prisoners labours, malnutrition and brutality of their guards has been well documented. George survived until the 25th August 1943. His records show he died of acute enteritis. George is commemorated at Chungkai War Cemetary, Thailand.

Sgt. Arthur Dix Taylor. Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, 104 Sqd.. (d.25th Aug 1943)

Arthur Taylor was born on 28th July 1921 and subsequently joined the RAF Volunteer Reserve. In 1943 he was serving with 104 Sqdn Bomber Command and based in the Middle East. At 18.44hrs on the evening of 24th August 1943 his Wellington aircraft took off from its base on a bombing raid, I believe to Torre Anunziata, Italy. Arthur was the rear gunner / wireless operator. After taking off nothing more was heard of the aircraft or its crew.

I have unconfirmed information that the aircraft may have come down after suffering engine trouble during the flight. {This information is from my mother who is the sister of Arthur Taylor.} To this day the location of where the aircraft came down is still unknown and the bodies of the crew have never been recovered, although it is thought to be somewhere at the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea. My mother gave me the names of two other crew members of the flight who were Sgt John William Snowden of Hartlepool Co. Durham and Jonny Pape of Cockermouth, Cumbria.

Arthur Dix Taylor is remembered on Column 272 of the Alamein Memorial. I have only recently started this research but have, so far, not been been able to find out anything further about this bombing raid. I am the nephew of Arthur Dix Taylor but I was not born until nine years after he died.

Pte. Frederick Thomas Ford. British Army, 2nd Btn. Loyal (North Lancs) Regiment. (d.20th January 1942)

My great uncle, Private Frederick Ford, served with the 2nd Btn. Loyal (North Lancs) Regiment in Malaya and is buried at the Kranji War Cemetery. I have tried to research what action the Loyal Regiment were involved in on the date of his death - 20th January 1942 - but it isn't really clear. However, there are several references to the Loyal Regiment 2nd battalion on the net. One such site is www.cofepow.org.uk/pages/armedforces_loyal_regiment.htm

2nd Lt. Erik Boelskov. British Army, Special Operations Executive. (d.25th Aug 1943)

Second Lieutenant Erik Boelskov was the son of Jorgen and Olga Boelskov of Koge, Denmark. He was aged 22 when he died and is buried in the Koge Cemetery in Denmark.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
