Stories from 24th April 1943

Spr. George William Rymell. British Army, 255 Field Company Royal Engineers. (d.24th Apr 1943)

George William Rymell served with 255 Field Company Royal Engineers and died, age 22, on the 24th April 1943. He was born in Willington Quay 1920, the son of Thomas H. and Mary Rymell (nee Morland).

He is commemorated on the WW2 Roll of Honour Plaque in the entrance of Jarrow Town Hall and is buried in Massicault War Cemetery.

Vin Mullen

Pte. Joseph Franey. British Army, 13th Btn. King's (Liverpool) Regiment. (d.24th April 1943)

Joesph Franey was a great uncle and, though I never met him, his memory was kept alive through his niece, my mother.

The story, perhaps not uncommon in those days, tells of his brother John, on hearing his brother was missing in action whilst serving with the Chindits in Burma, going to Burma to look for him. The only sighting John had to go on at the time was Joseph last seen leaving a church. John never managed to find his brother, being himself hospitalised in Burma with malaria for many months.

Records indicate his regiment came under attack with many losses. He, another private and an NCO were separated from their remaining troops. Their respective bodies were found some weeks later, with indications they had died whilst under attack.

Joseph is remembered on the Rangoon Memorial in Myanmar, modern-day Burma.

P/O. James Corke Donald. Royal Canadian Air Force, 415 Squadron. (d.24th April 1943)

James Donald was a Pilot Officer in the 415th Torpedo Bomber Squadron. James had been a bomber pilot and had completed the required number of sorties for a pilot in the war, but he requested transition to fighter planes to make the transition from the four-man crew of the Hampden bomber to the single pilot fighter, the Spitfire. He was instructing pilots in the Hampden when ironically he was involved in a tragic aerial accident with a Spitfire during a training flight. James was killed on 24th of April 1943 as a result of that accident, at the age of 21. He was buried in West Thorney St. Nicholas Churchyard.

Robert Wood

Sgt. James Graham. MM. British Army, 16th/5th Lancers Royal Armoured Corps. (d.24th Apr 1943)

James Bugg was the son of Harry Bugg and Maud Norfolk and was born in Aldham on 6th March 1915. James lived in Church Road Fordham. He died in 1943, but his records are listed under the name of James Graham, as he had changed his surname in 1940. This information is confirmed by an entry in the London Gazette on the 5th April 1940. It states: ‘I, James Bugg of Church Road Fordham Essex, a member of H.M. Forces hereby give notice that I intend after the expiration of 21 days from the date of publication of this notice to assume the surname of Graham in lieu of my present surname of Bugg.’

A few weeks before his death on 24th April, Sergeant Graham was awarded the Military Medal. His citation reads: On the 9th April 1943 at Fondouk, this Serjeant drove his tank alongside his Troop Leaders which had been knocked out and set fire and burning fiercely. Although he knew he was only 300 yards from an Anti Tank position he assisted his troop leader to the ground and then jumped onto the tank and succeeded in opening the driver’s door and pulled the driver to safety who was unconscious and on fire. He then went back to the tank, in which the ammunition was now exploding and endeavoured to release the co-driver and only gave up when he discovered the door was locked on the inside. His example of courage was an inspiration to all.

James was killed on 24th April 1943 at Debal Kourine. He is remembered at Massicault War Cemetery in Tunisia and on the Fordham War memorial in Essex.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
