Stories from 23rd June 1943

Flt.Sgt. James Douglas "Douglas" Hamilton. Royal Canadian Air Force, 427 Squadron. (d.23rd June 1943)

In reviewing my deceased mother's papers, I found the following information about her fiancé who was killed in the war. He was James Douglas Hamilton (FS) P R102390, killed in action June 23rd 1943 age 22 of 427 Lion Squadron (Ferte Manus Certas). He was a Flight Sergeant Pilot from Kenaston, Sask I am confident, in the accuracy of this information, as my mother had told me about Douglas many years ago, and had given me his jacket, scarf and the telegram announcing his death, which she had been keeping. It may be of use to know that the gentleman went by Douglas, his middle name, and his mother's name was Alice. I have seen a few photos of Douglas among my mother's albums.

Flt.Lt. Thomas Fraser McCrorie. Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, 75 Squadron . (d.23rd June 1943)

Flight Lieutenant (Pilot) Thomas McCrorie was the son of John Andrew and Margaret McCrorie; husband of Joan McCrorie of Broom, Warwickshire. He was 27 when his plane crashed and his body was washed ashore. He is buried in the Hemelumer Oldeferd (Molkwerum) Protestant Churchyard, Friesland, Netherlands.

W/OII. Robert Ernest Tod. DFM. Royal Canadian Air Force, 75 Squadron . (d.23rd June 1943)

Warrant Officer Class II (Wireless Op./Air Gunner) Robert Tod was the Son of Alexander and Mary Edith Tod of St. Vital, Manitoba, Canada. He and his twin brother, Richard, both lost their lives when their aircraft was shot down. They were 23 years old and are buried in the Medemblik General Cemetery, Noord-Holland, Netherlands.

Sgt. Alfred Thompson. Royal Air Force, 90 Squadron. (d.23rd June 1943)

Alfred Thompson served with 90 Squadron. I was his 4 year old cousin, at the time he lost his life, my birthday is the same as the date he was killed. The story from my aunt which I learned was that, the bail out command had been issued. The pilot of the plane was unable to get out of his seat (due to firepower injuries). My cousin was readying himself for bail out but calls from his best friend (the pilot) had him go to his aid. Time ran out for them and two others who were afraid to jump. I understand three of the crew survived who related the story. I would like to have access to any formal records that would be available.

Ken Mulvey

Sgt. James Munro Hurson. Royal Air Force, 83 Squadron. (d.23rd June 1943)

My father James Hurson died before I was born, so I never knew him. My mother was six months pregnant. I have his letters he wrote to her and other mementos. The RAF paid for my education in London. I went on to become a nurse and emigrated to the U.S.

If so please let us know.

Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.

Celebrate your own Family History

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
