Stories from 23rd April 1943

Pte. Frederick Hall. British Army, 8th Battalion Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders. (d.23rd Apr 1943)

Private Fred Hall 3715083, was my grandma's dearly loved brother. Uncle Fred was 27 when he was killed in action in Medjez de Bab in Tunisia where he is laid to rest, grave ref 4.E.15 in the war cemetery.

I have the original telegram reporting his death. I would love to find out more about his service records.

Julie Stilwell

Pte. William Alexander Cooper. British Army, Royal Army Medical Corps. (d.23rd April 1943)

William Cooper is buried at Massicault War Cemetery, Tunisia.

William

Capt. Ralph Barrie Erskine. British Army, 8th Battalion Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders. (d.23rd April 1943)

Barrie in kilt 1941

Barrie Erskine was born in January 1918, two weeks after his father Captain Ralph Erskine RFC was killed in Italy when his Sopwith Camel was shot down behind enemy lines. Educated at Harrow, Barrie was by all accounts a charming man with some unconventional habits such as standing in front of an open fire and lifting his kilt to warm his bottom! He joined the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders in 1940 and was killed in action while laying telephone cables at the Battle of Longstop Hill on 23rd of April 1943.

Robert Lee

L/Cpl. Norman Jellicoe. British Army, 1st Btn. East Surrey Regiment. (d.23rd April 1943)

Norman Jellicoe died during Battle for Longstop Hill and is buried in Medez al Bab cemetery. He was 21 years old. A great uncle of mine. Nan's brother.

Donald Loga

Pte Stanley Frank Wilson. British Army, 1st Btn Loyal (North Lancashire) Regiment. (d.23rd of April 1943)

This is the story as I know it. It comes from my mother, who was Stanley Wilson's sister.

Stanley joined the Army in 1940 when he was 18 years old. He served with the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment 1st Battalion until his death, killed in action, on 23rd of April 1943 aged 20 years. He is buried Massicault War Cemetery II. M. 20. Tunisia. Son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Wilson, of Hither Green, London.

I believe he wrote letter to his Mum (my Nan) to say he would be home soon. I have added photos so he will be remembered. And rightly so.

Mrs Sharon Frankis

Sgt. William McMillan. British Army, 8th Battalion Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. (d.23rd April 1943)

William McMillan was my second great uncle. He was born in 1921 in Bridgend of Isle of Islay, Scotland and my Great Gran's older brother. He served with the 8th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders and was killed in action on 23rd of April 1943. He was just 22 years old. He is buried in Tunisia. His grave reads "No Dawn Shall Rise No sun Shall Set But We'll Remember Him".

I don't have any photographs of him but I did notice there were some others that had posted with relatives that had passed away that exact same day so it would be more than likely William knew some of them. His name is one of the many that are remembered in Edinburgh Castle.

L/Bdr. Leonard P. Heinson. British Army, 81st Anti-Tank Regiment Royal Artillery. (d.25th Apr 1943)

At the time of Leonard Heinson's death, the 81st Anti-Tank Regiment was part of 1st Division, which fought in the North Africa Campaign.

Darren Heinson

Can you help us to add to our records?

The names and stories on this website have been submitted by their relatives and friends. If your relations are not listed please add their names so that others can read about them

Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?

If so please let us know.

Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.

Celebrate your own Family History

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
