Stories from 22nd November 1942

Sgt. Thomas W. Brock. Royal Air Force, Air Gunner 44 Sqn. (d.22nd Nov1942)

Thomas Brock was my cousin and, at the age of 32, was the "old man" of his crew captained by Plt Off Stanley Ryder Young aged 23. They took off from Waddington, time unknown, on the night of 22 Nov 1942 en-route for Stuttgart. Their aircaft was Lanc W4304 KM-C which had been delivered to Waddington on 10 Oct 1942 and had completed 55 flying hours to date. Somewhere, either en-route or returning from Stuttgart, they were lost without trace. No further communication had been received from the aircraft. All 7 of the crew are remembered on the Runneymede Memorial like so many were before and after them.

I only wish that they had been found and had a resting place. I served with the RAF for 20 years, some of that time in Germany, and would have liked just to be able to stand infront of his grave and just say "Thanks" for their sacrifice. I know nothing of his previous service which is a great pity as he left a wife, who I have never met and have no idea what happened to her after his passing.

Paul Evans

Sgt. Thomas William Brock. Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve , 44 Sqn.. (d.22nd Nov 1942)

Thomas was my first cousin once removed and was born in Mildenhall, Suffolk, December 1911, the son of Thomas and Emma Maud Brock. Thomas was serving with 44(R)Sqn RAF when lost without trace on the night of 22/23 November 1942. He was the Mid Upper Gunner in P/O S R Young's crew flying Lanc 1 W4304 KM-C outbound from Waddington on ops to Stuttgart. The aircraft was lost either en-route or returning from the target, there had been no contact with KM-C to advise any particular problem. The crew have no known grave and are therefore remembered on the Runnymede Memorial.

The crew were:

  • Pilot : P/O S R Young 80194 aged 23 RAFVR
  • F/Eng : Sgt C A Weymouth 524640 28 RAF
  • Nav : F/O D J Appleton 106529 20 RAFVR
  • Wop/AG: Sgt W K D Page 1310464 U/K RAFVR
  • Obs : Sgt E A Waters 405531 22 RNZAF
  • Wop/AG: Sgt T W Brock 1395027 31 RAFVR
  • Wop/AG F/Sgt J G Tough R83273 20 RCAF
It is such a pity that their final resting places are unknown and that I have no place to go and just say "Thanks" for their sacrifice. All remaining family have now, as far as I am aware, passed. Thomas was married to Rose Ellen Brock nee Rowland but I cannot trace any remaining family which is such a shame. If any of the above names ring a bell, please get in touch.

Corporal Alan Seager. Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, . (d.22nd Nov 1942)

We are looking for Alan's wife Barbara Alice Seager, born in Glasgow, or any family to get in touch. We are also seeking any further information from any relatives of Clifford Charles Weston, RAF Voluntary Reserve who also died as a POW. He is buried at Ambon War Cemetery. Many thanks

Fiona MacDonald

Sgt. Raymond Henry Alvey. Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, 144 Sqdn.. (d.22nd Nov 1942)

Raymond Alvey was my mother's younger brother. He was in the RAF Volunteer Reserve and was called up in September 1939. He served in Coastal Command with 120, 489 and 144 squadrons as a wireless operator/air gunner. He was on an operation over the Norwegian coast in a Handley Page Hampden, when he was shot down and reported 'missing believed killed in action'. Raymond's father (my grandfather) George Alvey spent a lot of time trying to find out the details but to no avail. Later research suggests that his body was probably recovered by the Germans and buried at sea, although this is not confirmed. Raymond's fellow crew members were Sqn Ldr John Richard Darbyshire Hird, Sgt Davidson William Hepplewhite and Sgt Robert John Coles.

Raymond wrote detailed diaries of his three years of service. I also have his father's correspondence with the Air Ministry and Red Cross when he was trying to find out what had happened and where Raymond and the other crew members might have been buried. (It seems likely that they were buried at sea by the Germans). There is a commemorative plaque near the site of the crash and the crew are also commemorated at Runnymede.

I am intending to write a biography of my uncle, based on the above sources, operations record books etc, and would be pleased to receive any information that might be relevant. I would particularly like to hear from descendants of the other crew members, and from those who might have served in 144 squadron at RAF Leuchars in November 1942, or in 489 squadron earlier that year.

L/Cpl. Victor McNally. British Army, No.6 Commando East Surrey Rgt.. (d.22nd November 1942)

My grandfather, Victor McNally, served with the East Surrey Regiment in WWII. His secondary regiment was No. 6 Commando. He died in action on 22nd November 1942 and is buried in the Bone War Cemetery, Annaba. Does anyone know anything more about him?

Diane McNally

Sgt. Raymond Henry "Bill" Alvey. Royal Air Force, 144 Squadron. (d.22nd Nov 1942)

Raymond Alvey was my mother's brother. He served in Coastal Command, firstly with 120 Sqn, then with 489 Sqn and finally (and very briefly) with 144 Sqn. His final flight, on 22 November 1942, left RAF Wick for a nuisance bombing raid over the coast of Norway north of Stavanger. Their Hampden was shot down on Karmoy Island. All four crew were killed.

  • The pilot was Sqn Ldr John Hird,
  • the navigator/bomb aimer was Sgt Davidson Hepplewhite,
  • and the wireless operator/air gunners were Sgt Robert Coles and my uncle.

Raymond Alvey wrote detailed diaries of his three years of service.

Gnr. Albert Reginald Pearson. British Army, 21st L.A.A. Regiment Royal Artillery. (d.22nd Nov 1942)

Albert Pearson died at sea on the Shonan Maru as a POW. His name is carved on the Commonwealth War Graves Memorial in Singapore.

The names and stories on this website have been submitted by their relatives and friends. If your relations are not listed please add their names so that others can read about them

Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?

If so please let us know.

Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.

Celebrate your own Family History

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
