Stories from 21st June 1940

Sub Lt. James Black Bell. Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve, HMS Prunella. (d.21st Jun 1940)

My uncle, Sub-Lt James Black Bell was killed because of the torpedoing of HMS Prunella - ex mercantile Cape Howe. It is my understanding that he got off the ship on one of the lifeboats, but that in the storm that came up that night this boat was lost. If anyone has any more information on this event I would be grateful if you could share it with me.

John Bell

Able Seaman Leslie John Heaver. Royal Navy, HMS Prunella. (d.21nd June 1940)

My uncle was Able Seaman Leslie John Heaver (d. 21 June 1940) whilst serving on H.M.S. Cape Howe. I was told he was on a lifeboat but was shot or torpedoed. I would really appreciate any more information about my uncle to give to my Mom.

Julie Mathison

Ordinary Seaman Sidney Walter Bennet. Navy, HMS Cape How.

My uncle was Ordinary Seaman Sidney Walter Bennett. He lost his life on 21st June 1940 on board HMS Cape Howe. I think he had only been in the Navy a matter of months.

David Moore

Ordinary Seaman Sidney Walter Bennet. Navy, HMS Cape How.

My uncle was Ordinary Seaman Sidney Walter Bennett. He lost his life on 21st June 1940 on board HMS Cape Howe. I think he had only been in the Navy a matter of months.

David Moore

Able Seaman. William H. Musselwhite. Royal Naval Reserve, HMS Prunella. (d.21st Jun 1940)

My father William H. Musselwhite was lost on HMS Cape Howe aka. HMS Prunella, in 1940. In the mid 50s I did meet a survivor from the ship who happened to be on the same ship as my self. Then in 1993 I met possibly the only remaining survivor.

Peter Musselwhite

P.O. Reginald Eric Prothero. Royal Naval Reserve, HMS Prunella. (d.21st Jun 1940)

My Great Uncle died on the HMS Cape Howe. His name was Reginald Eric Prothero. I was named after him.

Eric Prothero-Brooks

P/O. Murray Anderson Butler. Royal Air Force, 42 Squadron. (d.21st June 1940)

Pilot Officer (Navigator) Murray Butler was the son of Floyd Allison Butler and Isabelle Mignonette Butler of Newcastle, Ontario, Canada. He was aged 27 when he died and is buried in the Hajaardemaal Churchyard in Denmark.

S Flynn

Sapper Frederick George Grainger. British Army, 665th Artisan Work Company Royal Engineers. (d.21st Jun 1940)

Frederick Grainger was my father’s father. His date of birth was 15th January 1893. In 1939, prior to the war, he was a lumper on the fish docks. He was the husband of Alice Mary Catherine Grainger they lived at 6 Hart Street, Cleethorpes. He died 21st of June 1940, aged 47, at Folkstone Race Course, Westerhanger, Stanford Road and was buried on 26th of June 1940. I’m genuinely curious about how and where he died as it seems quite strange, it being a race course. Dad never spoke about his father and it was quite by accident that we discovered that there is a headstone in the cemetery for him not far from where my Dad was laid to rest.

Celebrate your own Family History

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
