  • The Wartime Memories Project has been running for 24 years. If you would like to support us, a donation, no matter how small, would be much appreciated, annually we need to raise enough funds to pay for our web hosting and admin or this site will vanish from the web.

Wanted: Digital copies of Group photographs, Scrapbooks, Autograph books, photo albums, newspaper clippings, letters, postcards and ephemera relating to WW2. We would like to obtain digital copies of any documents or photographs relating to WW2 you may have at home.

If you have any unwanted photographs, documents or items from the First or Second World War, please do not destroy them. The Wartime Memories Project will give them a good home and ensure that they are used for educational purposes. Flying Officer Daniel McLean. Royal Air Force, 578th Squadron.

Daniel Mclean was the sole survivor of aircraft, LKL, which was shot down over Germany, 21st February 1945. As bomb aimer during bombing run, the nose cone was blasted off by an attack of ME109s, at 10,000 feet. He was shot on his left side, but managed to get his right arm hooked into the harness during freefall and open chute. He was captured and was not given any medical attention.

He was transfered from a German police cell to Dulag Luft near Wetzlar, then onto Stalagluft111A (Stalag X111d) southeast of Nuremberg. On April 17th 1945, General Patton and his tanks arrived at the camp gates and he was given medical attention also Freedom. This is confirmed in the book Based at Burn Mk11.

Sgt P Blake

My uncle Sgt P. Blake was a gunner with 578 sqdn he died on 21.02.1945 while flying on a raid over Germany bombing the Rhenania Ossag oil refinery at Dusseldorf. They flew out of Raf Burn. He was the son of David and May Blake of Edinburgh.

F/Lt. John Goodwin Maguire. Royal Canadian Air Force, Leaside 432 Sqdn.. (d.21st Feb 1945)

My grandfather, John Maguire enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force when he was about 20 years old. He rose to the rank of Flight Lieutenant and was serving as navigator when his aircraft, a Halifax VII bomber, was shot down on route from East Moor airport to Worms, Germany, on February 21, 1945.

Jack and five other crew members were killed; the remaining member was injured and remained hospitalized until liberation. His crew mates were: Flight Lt. E.S. Maguire (pilot), Sgt. A.A. MacDonald, Flying Officer C.W. McMillan, Flight Lt. C.S. Moir, Flight Sgt. F.T. McLachlan and Flight Sgt. E.J. McCalarty.

Flt.Sgt. Derek Jones Bates. Royal Air Force, 114 Sdqn.. (d.21st Feb 1945)

Derek Bates was a volunteer RAF navigator. He was in a Boston Mark IV taking part in an armed reconnaissance flight on 21st of February 1945. His plane was shot down in the sea off the coast of Falconara, Italy. Wreckage was found, but no trace of the crew. Crew names are on the Malta Memorial, Floriana, Valletta.

Flying Officer William Mallen was a navigator in the RCAF.

Gunner Charles Henry Seipp. US Navy, USS Saratoga. (d.21st February 1945)

My great uncle, Charles Henry Seipp Jr., served as a marine gunner on the USS Saratoga during WW2. He lost his life, killed by a kamikaze pilot on 21st February 1945. Does anyone remember him?

F/O. William Brown Mallen. Royal Canadian Air Force, 76 Sqdn.. (d.21st Feb 1945)

William Brown Mallen was born in Kelso, Scotland in 1910. He left Scotland for Canada in 1929 and worked as a woodman, sawyer, until he joined the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in 1935 and enlisted five years later.

He was a Flying Officer Navigator of Halifax Bomber NR-191MPE which did not return from a night raid on Worms, Germany on 21st February 1945. All the crew died and are buried at Rheinberg Cemetery in Germany. It was their 19th sortie and so close to the end of operations for 76 Squadron in May 1945.

Cpl. Jefferson Wilcox Pafford. United States Army, A Battery 589th Field Artillery Regiment. (d.21st February 1945)

Jefferson Pafford was captured on 17th of December 1944 and sent to Stalag 6G. He died of tuberculosis on 21st of February 1945.

Clyde H Ray



Grdm. Stanley John Smith. British Army, 3rd Btn. Irish Guards. (d.21st February 1945)

All I know is that Stanley Smith was with the 3rd Irish Guards and was killed crossing a river. He is buried at Misbeek War Cemetery in Holland.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.
