Sig John Brereton. British Army, 28 Wing Sect. Royal Corps of Signals. (d.20th June 1944)

John Brereton, my grandfather, was born in Clun, Shropshire on 15th March 1913. Little is known about John at this time other than he descends from a long line of Brereton from around the Shropshire and Cheshire regions. In the 1930-40 he lived around Stafford, towards the late thirties, Church Eaton where he met and married Mary Barbara Elizabeth Spencer in 1938. We know from the 1939 census that John resided at Park Hall Farm, Church Eaton. He has one child, my mother, who was born on 21st March 1939. He enlisted in the armed forces at the beginning of World War II.

He was a signalman. His service number is 2367472, and he served with 28 Wing Section Royal Corps of Signals. He was posted to Malaya, Singapore and was present during the Fall of Singapore where the allies suffered a humiliating defeat against the Japanese, 7-15 February 1942. With many thousands of prisoners of war he was set to work on the Japanese labour camps and held in the prisoner of war camp, Camp Java around the Java area.

We know from records that he left Camp Java for Singapore on 19th May 1944 on one of the renowned Hell Ships. The manifest from the “Kiska Maru” details him in party No 20. He arrived in Singapore on the 21st. He then left Singapore for Japan on 25th June on either the “Hozan/Kokusei” or the “Hiyoki Maru”.

The ship he was in was sunk by the Allies a few day later. Records from the War Office listed him missing on the 20th of June. Later on the 20th of June another report lists him as being killed in action whilst he was prisoner of war. His name is listed amongst the many at a memorial located in Kranji, North West, Singapore.

Cpl. Arthur W. Allen. Royal Marines, HMS Effingham. (d.20th June 1944)

My eldest brother, Arthur Allen, was on HMS Effingham and was rescued after it struck a rock in Norway. There was a photo of him after he was rescued in one of the London evening papers. One of our neighbours knocked on our door to show my parents and this was the first we knew about it.

Unfortunately, Arthur drowned in a reservoir near Staines whilst doing underwear experiments as a Royal Marine frogman.

James Allen

Cpl. Charles James Shields. South African Medical Corps, . (d.20th June 1944)

Corporal Shields was the Husband of Cornelia A. B. Shields.

He was 48 and is buried in the Fort Beaufort Cemetery, Eastern Cape, South Africa.

Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?

If so please let us know.

Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.

Celebrate your own Family History

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
