Stories from 19th January 1945

Flying Officer Alec Edward "Pops" Harris. RAF, Observer 256 Squadron. (d.19th Jan 1945)

I am Alec Harris' daughter and was ten years old when he and his pilot crashed when taking off from Nice airport in their mosquito in January 1945. My father was the navigator. They were first posted as missing and son after my father's body washed up on a beach just south of Marseilles. He is buried in the British cemetry there. I would be most interested to hear from anyone who may remember my father. He was forty years old when he died and quite the oldest in the squadron where his nickname was "pops". Most members of the squadron would have been much younger so may still be alive. His death affected my mother deeply and she died of cancer in 1960. I think she felt it was a cruel fate in that he died so close to the end of the war and especially after he had been in much more dangerous missions previously. As far as I remember my father was in Malta, North Africa, Sardinia and Fogia, Italy. I have a photo of him also in front of the Sphinx in Egypt but am not sure where this fits in chronologically. If there is any record of his service and a record of where he was and when I would be most grateful to know how to obtain this information. I now live in Oregon in the USA. Sincerely Sally B Smith (nee Harris)

Signalman Albert Derbyshire. British Army, Royal Corps of Signals. (d.19th Jan 1945)

I would like to find any information regarding my Great Uncle, Signalman Albert Derbyshire 2584305. He was captured on 3/6/40 at St Omer and sent to Stalag XXA on 21/7/40 Prisoner No. 18781. He was transferred to Stalag XXB in Oct 41. He died on 19/1/45 and this is the part that hurts the family as we don`t know how. I thought that he possibly died on one of the forced marches but, reading some of the stories on this site it would seem he died before the marches began.

Rfm. Charles Henry "Chuck" Heywood. British Army, 7th Battalion Cameronian Scottish Rifles. (d.19th Jan 1945)

My father, Samuel Blackwood, served alongside Charles Heywood during WW2 in the 52nd Lowland Division. Sadly Charles was killed in battle in Holland on 19th January 1945. My father (now 89 years old) has fond memories of him and a photograph taken shortly before he fell. He would like, if possible, to pass on the photograph and a copy of a book which he has written to a relative of Charles. We know that he came from Preston and was married to Mary Alice. I would be very grateful for any info of Charles's relatives as my dad would really like to get in touch.

Henri Michel Leon LeBlicq. Beligan Army, . (d.19th Jan 1945)

My uncle Henri Le Blicq died in Stalag 1B; I would like to find the circumstances of his death. His brother Joseph died in 1942 in Stalag II C.

Editors Note: the camp was dismantled at the latest in January 1945 which would have been about the time of his death. After the end of the war the remains of the Belgian soldiers were transported home.

CPO.Air. Robert Hetherington Nixon Halliday. Royal Navy, HMS Dipper. (d.19th Jan 1945)

Robert died aged 27. Born in Jarrow in 1917, he was the son of Frederick and Norah Jane Halliday (nee Nixon) of Jarrow.

Robert is buried in Jarrow Cemetery and is commemorated on the WW2 Roll of Honour Plaque in the entrance of Jarrow Town Hall.

Vin Mullen

Albert Derbyshire. British Army, 1 Air Form Sigs Royal Corps of Signals. (d.19th January 1945)

My great uncle, Albert Derbyshire, was wounded and captured at Dunkrik. He was admitted to Stalag XXa in 1940, Stalag XXb in 1941, then moved around till he died on 19th January 1945. His fate is unknown and there is no known grave for him. He may have been executed on the forced march from the Russians. I would be interested in hearing from anyone who knew him.

Paul Clive Rowley

Sgt. James Lindsay Cameron. Royal Air Force, . (d.19th January 1945)

Jimmy Cameron was a Navigator with the RAF.

Celebrate your own Family History

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
