Stories from 19th April 1942

Sgt. George Arthur Campbell. British Army, 30th Btn. The Buffs. (d.19th Apr 1942)

I am looking for any information about my Grandad George Campbell and any photos, as there aren't any in the family. He died when my mum was just three months old, demonstrating how to throw a hand grenade which exploded. My mum doesn't know what he looked like, so any Batallion photos would be brilliant.

Lisa Cracknell

Rfmn. Bertie Parkin. British Army, 1st Battalion Cameronians. (d.19th April 1942)

Bertie Parkin of the 1st Battalion Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) died on 19 April 1942, aged 26 years. His name is commemorated on the Rangoon Memorial. None of my family is sure what actually happened to Bertie, only he never came home. He was presumed killed or missing. A search on Google turns up a note about his campaign medals which somehow were sold in auction in 2008 and that his name is listed on the Rangoon Memorial in Myanmar.

I have a number of his letters home from 1941/42 when he was serving in Meadows Barracks, Secunderabad, Deccan, India. These go into a lot of detail: Onions with every meal and eggs costing 1d each. 10 Players cigarettes for 3d. Cakes and tea from the Charwalla which they get 'on the book' and pay for at the weekend. How the natives do everything for them and he even gets a shave in bed and then has his bed made and boots cleaned by a native. Going to the pictures to see "Green Light" and Laurel and Hardy in "A Close Shave". He goes about with a couple of friends from Hexham and Copley but doesn't mention their names. There's lots more letters and info if anyone is interested I can pass this on.

If anyone has any information or can tell me how to access the war diaries from the date he was listed as killed that would be hugely appreciated.

Andrew B.

Gnr. Charles Gallagher. British Army, 326 Battery Royal Artillery. (d.19th Apr 1942)

Charles died aged 23. Born in Jarrow in 1918, he was the son of Charles and Mary Elizabeth Gallagher (nee Rogers) of Primrose. He is buried in Jarrow Cemetery and commemorated on the WW2 Roll of Honour Plaque in the entrance of Jarrow Town Hall.

Vin Mullen

Ernest Johnson. British Army, 1st Btn. Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers . (d.19th Apr 1942)

Ernest Johnson was killed in action aged 30 in Burma and is buried in Rangoon Yangon.

Pte. Donald Macpherson. British Army, 1st Btn. Dorsetshire Regiment. (d.19th April 1942)

My mum, Donald's sister, told me this story. Donald Macpherson was heading home after 5 years posting when his troopship was diverted. My nan, Donald's mother and mum were sitting at home when they heard a voice shout "Mum". My Nan ran upstairs crying saying "It's Don something has happened". It was the evening of 19th April 1942.

A week later they were informed that Don was killed with his best mate during an air raid on Malta. He was 27 Years old.

Stuart Ferguson

Sgt. Geoffrey Lennox Avern. Royal Australian Air Force, . (d.19th April 1942)

Sergeant Avern was the Son of Henry Charles and Blanch Emily Avern, of Cooma, New South Wales, Australia.

He was 27 and is buried in Grave 112 in the Huelva British Cemetery in Spain.

Sgt. Philip Bernard Crossan. Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, 236 Sqdn. . (d.19th April 1942)

Celebrate your own Family History

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
