Stories from 18th August 1943

Sgt. Kenneth Frank Goode. Royal Air Force, 100 Squadron. (d.18th Aug 1943)

Sgt Kenneth Goode was my great uncle and I'm looking for information about his time in the RAF, eg. his age on joining or his age when he was killed, his mission, details of his flight etc. I am collating information about the Goode family and am having trouble locating Kenneth Goode on any of the genealogy sites.

Editors Note:

The crew took off in Lancaster ED647, HW-T at 21.24 on the 17th of August 1943 from Grimsby on a mission to Peenemunde. The aircraft crashed in the target area.

The crew were:

  • F/O H.I.Spiers RNZAF
  • Sgt C.W.Torbett
  • P/O J.Weaver
  • Sgt K.F.Goode
  • Sgt S.J.Cassell
  • Sgt O.M.Atkins
  • Sgt J.Francis
Sgt Cassell was buried locally on the 30th of August 1943, but he, with five of his comrades are commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial. Sgt Francis is buried in Poland at Malbork Commonwealth War Cemetery.

F/S John Francis Bell MacIntyre.. RAF, 12Sqd.. (d.18th Aug 1943)

W/Op John McIntyre was killed on 18th August 1943 in Lancaster III DV168 PH-F of 12sqd.

P/O Cecil Walter Alvin Manning.. RAF, 12Sqd.. (d.18th Aug 1943)

Bomb Aimer Cecil Manning was killed on 18th August 1943 in Lancaster III DV168 PH-F of 12sqd

Sgt Leonard Myers.. RAF, 12Sqd.. (d.18th Aug 1943)

Rear Gunr. Leonard Myers lost his life on 18th August 1943 in Lancaster III DV168 PH-F of 12sqd

F/O Phillip Henry Phillips.. RAAF, 12Sqd.. (d.18th Aug 1943)

Mid upper Gnr. Phillip Phillips oof the RAAF was killed on 18th August 1943 in Lancaster III DV168 PH-F of 12sqd.

S/Ldr. Fraser Burstock Slade.. DSO. RAF, 12Sqd.. (d.18th Aug 1943)

Pilot Fraser Slade was killed on 18th August 1943 flying Lancaster III DV168 PH-F of 12sqd

Sgt. George Humble. Royal Air Force, 49 Squadron. (d.18th Aug 1943)

On the night of the 17th/18th of August 1943 an attack was made on Peenemunde. Richard Todd-White and crew were flying on only their second trip of a second tour. All the crew died when Lancaster ED805 (EA-S) S-Sugar was brought down; five members were never found (possibly parachuted into the Baltic). The pilot is buried in Sweden and his 19 year-old gunner, Sgt George Humble is buried in Poland. The crew had only been on the squadron a week.

  • S/L R.N. Todd-White Pilot (Killed)
  • Sgt A. Purrington F/E (Killed)
  • F/O H.O. Batchelor Nav (Killed)
  • F/O B. James W/AG (Killed)
  • Sgt G. Humble A/G (Killed)
  • F/O F. Plant B/A (Killed)
  • gt T. Brocklehurst A/G (Killed)

Sgt George Humble was my uncle, but as I was not born until 1965 obviously I never knew him. I struggle to get my head around the fact that he was only 19, and I know my father (who had himself been in the Burma campaign) struggled with the loss of his little brother George for the rest of his life. My parents found George's grave in Poland when they retired and I have since befriended the relevant association as my way of honouring my uncle.

Sgt John James Newbon. Royal Air Force, 419 Squadron. (d.18th Aug 1943)

Halifax JD158 was the sixteenth of a series of thirty-eight Halifax Mk. II aircraft of the JD series to be manufactured by English Electric Company (Salmesbury & Preston) between May 7th and June 28th of 1943. It first shows on the Operations Record Book on May 23rd. of that year and designated as VR-D.

From that date until July 13th VR-D was the aircraft normally flown by F/O Chick McIntosh and his crew, who had several encounters with night fighters during that time. McIntosh flew ten operations on JD158 before completing his Tour. From July through to August 12th the Halifax with the triple headed dragon was flown by S/L McMurdy and his crew.

On the night of August 17/18th 1943 the captain of JD158 was F/L Stanley Heard who normally flew JB859 "Thundering Heard", but the aircraft was not available that night. (It has been mentioned in some sources that JD158 may have also been VR-H "Have Another" at some point in the time this Halifax was at 419 Squadron. Log Books and ORB for May through August 1943 show JD158 to be on strength with the squadron throughout that period. There is no gap found where it may have been removed from service, which is the only way that any other squadron code would be changed to another letter. From May 23rd to it's loss on August 17/18th records show JD158 was always VR-D.) Also the art work for "Have Another" shows a Kangaroo and a Joey riding a bomb, the explanation given for the use of these animals was that one of F/L Heard's men was Australian. Except for Sgt.Blyth and Sgt. Newborn, who both were RAF, all others of the Heard crew were Canadian. (There was an Australian pilot performing his second 2nd. pilot sortie with F/L Heard when the crew was lost which may have provided some confusion.) So from this information it looks like "Have Another" was not JD158 but another Halifax -H, most likely not 419 Squadron that I can find.

F/O. Elmont Gasper Prest. Royal Canadian Air Force, 619 Sqdn.. (d.18th Aug 1943)

I am looking for pictures of Elmont Gasper Prest FO/Navigator, Group 5 EE117 619 Sqdn. Anyone who knew him, or members of family of the rest of the crew who flew on Wing Commander McGhie's Lancaster. I would like photos of the plane or anything. I have one of a stone commemorating the crew on the site where the plane crashed, but I found it on a website I can no longer access.

Pte. Sydney J. Burnage. British Army, 5th Btn. Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Regiment. (d.18th Aug 1943)

Whilst visiting Thailand last year, and after visiting the Bridge over the River Kwai, we went to a British and Commonwealth Cemetery. Whilst doing our bit there and reading as many of the plaques as possible, I photographed Sydney Burnage's memory plaque. Mainly because I come from Hertfordshire. He was of no relationship to any of us, but I thought I might be able to inform his relatives that we paid our respects, but to no avail.

Sgt Francis Willetts. Royal Air Force, 10 Squadron. (d.18th August 1943)

Francis Willetts was an Air Gunner with 10 Squadron.

Derek Willetts

Sgt. Frank Grey. Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve , 467 Squadron. (d.18th August 1943)

Sergeant Frank Grey was my great uncle. He served as a bomb aimer on a Lancaster bomber in 467 Squadron under Bomber Command and was based at RAF Bottesford.

He was shot down on 18th of August 1943 in the famous raid on Peenemunde, the top secret weapons research area where the Nazis were developing the V1 and V2. Frank and the crew all perished. The raid was carried out in moonlight and at unusually low altitude to ensure maximum accuracy and damage. A diversionary attack on Berlin to distract enemy fighters had run its course and by the time they began their bombing runs enemy fighters were on the scene and the bombers of No 5 group, illuminated by the fires on the ground and moonlight paid a heavy price.

Flt.Sgt. Winston Woolley Blackmore. Royal Canadian Air Force, No. 428 Squadron. (d.18th Aug 1943)

Flt.Sgt. Winston Blackmore_RCAF

Winston Blackmore was the pilot of aircraft DK238, which was lost on the morning of 18th of August 1943 as part of the raid on the German rocket development site at Peenemuende. His Halifax bomber crashed near Barth, Germany. Sergeant Blackmore and his flight engineer, F.S. Williams, maintained the damaged aircraft while the remainder of the crew bailed out. Blackmore and Williams were both killed in the crash. The remaining five servicemen (F/Sgt. N.F. Oliver, F/Sgt. W.S.E Wood, Sgt. J.J.P.R Richard, Sgt. G.F. Hodson, and Sgt. R.G. Seaborn) successfully escaped the aircraft and were taken prisoner by the Germans.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
