photographs, documents or items from the First or Second World War, please do not destroy them.
The Wartime Memories Project will give them a good home and ensure that they are used for educational purposes. Please get in touch for the postal address, do not sent them to our PO Box as packages are not accepted.

PO Stwd. Joseph Briffa. Royal Navy, HMS Fiona. (d.18th Apr 1941) Hi my name is Ray Falzon and I would like to know about my mothers uncle. He served on Barham in WW2. He was maltese, a big guy and please if you have any photos I would be happy to see them as I know few things about him. His name was Joseph Briffa. Thank you for your time. Ray Falzon

ERA1. John Henry Smillie. Royal Navy, HMS Fiona. (d.18th April 1941) John Smillie was my Great Grandmother's brother who served on HMS Fiona during WW2 and died when the ship was bombed on 18th of April 1941.Douglas Cumming

Lt. Wilfred Edward Simkin. Royal Naval Reserve, HMS Fiona. (d.18th Apr 1941) Article from local newspaper states:
"Mr Walter Simkin and Mrs Simkin, From Ayr, have now received definite news concerning their second son, Lieut. Wilfred E. Simkin,R.N.R., who was reported missing and presumed killed in April last. A letter from the only surviving officer of the Fiona, reported as sunk at that time by enemy action and on which vessel the lieutenant served, states that he was killed instantaneously on April 18th at sea. Lieut Simkin was 30 years of age, and before joining the R.N.R. was for eight years a member of the Ayrshire Constabulary.
Their youngest son, Kenneth, who was with the Australians in the Middle East, has been posted missing for some months and no news as to his fate has been received.
H.M.S.Fiona was reportedly attacked near Sidi Barrani in the Mediterranean."A Brownridge

Wg Cdr. Arthur Montague Aubrey "Monty" Birch. Royal Air Force, 107 Squadron. (d.18th Apr 1941) Arthur Birch died age 29. His aircraft was shot down over Norway on the way to bomb a German installation.Virginia Baird
