  • The Wartime Memories Project has been running for 24 years. If you would like to support us, a donation, no matter how small, would be much appreciated, annually we need to raise enough funds to pay for our web hosting and admin or this site will vanish from the web.
  • 22nd April 2024 - Please note we currently have a huge backlog of submitted material, our volunteers are working through this as quickly as possible and all names, stories and photos will be added to the site. If you have already submitted a story to the site and your UID reference number is higher than 263973 your information is still in the queue, please do not resubmit, we are working through them as quickly as possible.

Wanted: Digital copies of Group photographs, Scrapbooks, Autograph books, photo albums, newspaper clippings, letters, postcards and ephemera relating to WW2. We would like to obtain digital copies of any documents or photographs relating to WW2 you may have at home.

If you have any unwanted photographs, documents or items from the First or Second World War, please do not destroy them. The Wartime Memories Project will give them a good home and ensure that they are used for educational purposes. PO John Andrews Tolmie. Royal Canadian Air Force, 433 Squadron. (d.17th August 1944)

Pilot Officer (Navigator) Tolmie was the son of Roderick G. and Mary M. Tolmie of Montreal, Province of Quebec, Canada.

He was 25 when he crashed into the Sea west of Langeland, Denmark. He is buried in the Bagenkop Cemetery in Denmark, Row 14, Grave 115.

PO Maurice Elmer Fairall. Royal Canadian Air Force, 433 Squadron. (d.17th August 1944)

Pilot Officer (Air Gunner) Fairall was the son of Clarence Horace and Lillian Fairall of Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

He was 23 when he crashed Southwest of Langeland, Denmark. He is buried in a Joint grave 2-60 in the Bogo Churchyard in Denmark.

P/O. Bernard Bercuson. Royal Canadian Air Force, 433 Squadron . (d.17th Aug 1944)

Pilot Officer (Wireless Op./Air Gunner) Bernard Bercuson was the son of Jack and Sarah Bercuson and husband of Adele Bercuson, of Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada. He was aged 28 when he died and is buried in the Magleby Churchyard, Langeland in Denmark.

P/O. Joseph Georges Marcel Savard. Royal Canadian Air Force, 433 Squadron. (d.17th Aug 1944)

Pilot Officer (Pilot) Jospeh Savard was the Son of Joseph Odilon Savard and Antoinette Savard, of Montreal, Province of Quebec, Canada. He was aged 19 when he died and is buried in the Magleby (Langeland) Churchyard in Denmark.

Sgt. Terence Michael Twomey. DFM. Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, 97 SqUadron. (d.17th Aug 1944)

Sergeant (Air Gunner) Terrance Twomey was the son of William John and Bridget Beatrice Twomey and husband of Teresa Margaret Twomey of Bethnal Green, London. He was aged 21 when he died and is buried in the Pederskirke Churchyard in Denmark.

Sgt. William Thomas Ross Stephenson. Royal Canadian Air Force, 104 Sqdn.. (d.17th August 1941)

Sgt Pilot William T R Stephenson was shot down by a German 'night intruder' as he took off from Driffield around midnight on August 16th, all seven aboard were killed.

F/O. William Chard Fairgrieve. Royal Canadian Air Force, 428 Squadron. (d.17th Aug 1944)

Flying Officer (Pilot) William Fairgrieve was the son of William T. and Claire C. Fairgrieve of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, husband of Marjorie K. Fairgrieve. He was 25 years old when he died and is buried in the Sejero Cemetery in Denmark.

Major David John Wallace. British Army, attd. Special Operations Executive King's Royal Rifle Corps. (d.17th August 1944)

Major Wallace was the Son of Capt. the Rt. Hon. Euan (David) Wallace, M.C., P.C., and of Lady Idina Wallace (nee Sackville), of Petworth, Sussex; husband of Joan Prudence Wallace, of West Kensington, London.

He lost his life while attached as an observer to the 10th Greek Division, the strongest national resistance force fighting against the Germans

He was 29 when he died and is buried in the Paramythia Civil Cemetery in Greece.

Sqd.Ldr. John Philip Liversidge. Royal Air Force, 178 Squadron. (d.17th August 1944)

My father, John Liversidge, whom I never really knew because I was so young. He was an educator in the small rural town of Castlemaine in Victoria, Australia. After pre-service training in Australia and Canada he became part of the RAF Bomber Command.

In August 1944, 178 Squadron were involved in flying from Italy to Poland to drop supplies in support of the Warsaw uprising. On the night of 16/17th August Squadron Leader Liversidge was navigator of a B-24 Liberator bomber that was shot down over Krakow in Poland. Evidently the plane crashed alongside Oscar Schindler's factory.

Many years later, in 1986, a memorial plaque was placed next the factory. Three airmen are named on the plaque, although more were killed. The crew are buried in the Rakowicki Military Cemetery in Krakow.

Anthony Jones



Capt. John Anthony Hope. British Army, 1st Buckinghamshire Btn Oxford and Bucks Light Infantry. (d.17th Aug 1944)

John Hope was born on 20th of April 1919 in Buckinghamshire. John was a Captain in the 1st Bucks Battalion. He was killed on 17th of August 1944. He was 25 years old.

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.














The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.
