Stories from 15th September 1944

Driver (IC). Edward William New. British Army, Royal Corps of Signals. (d.15th Sep 1944)

I have a letter from Signalman Alfred G Still 2356510 to my Grandmother Lillian New about the circumstances of his death. In hope that it would be of some comfort to her.

Sue Day

Gnr. Thomas Hardisty. British Army, 74 Light Anti Aircraft Regiment, 186 Bty, H Troop. Royal Artillery. (d.15th Sep 1944)

My father, Tom Hardisty served with H. Troop. 74 Lt A.A. Regt, in Malta between October 1941 and July 1943, he then moved to Sicily on the 14th of July and the 28th of August 1944. The photograph would have been taken in either Malta or Sicily. I hope that someone may recognize others on the photograph with my father. I would hope for some feedback as to who the others may be. I'm sure they would have been close friends in those hard and sad times. Father sadly died in Sept 1944. I was too young at that time to be able to get to know him, before he died just aged 39yrs old. I would appreciate any information received.

Dorothy Hardisty

Pte. George Lindsay Wilson. British Army, 8th Btn Royal Scots. (d.15th Sep 1944)

George Wilson died age 25, he was the son of Joseph and Frances M. A. Wilson of Jarrow and is bruied in Kasterlee War Cemetery. He is commemorated on the WW2 Roll of Honour Plaque in the entrance of Jarrow Town Hall.

Tpr. Albert Frudd. British Army, 141st Armoured Regment Royal Armoured Corps. (d.15th Sept 1944)

I never knew Albert Frudd, but did meet his parents. He served with the Royal Armoured Corps 141st Regiment (7th Battalion, The Buffs.) I have no information other than his service number and regiment and that he died on 15th September 1944. I have visited his grave at Bayeux and he is buried by the side of L/Cpl D.F. Moore same regiment and battalion killed on the same day. They may have been comrades in the same tank. If anyone has any tips on where I can get any information please contact me.

John Frudd

Dvr. Albert Hope. British Army, Royal Army Service Corps. (d.15th Sep 1944)

Albert Hope was the Son of Harry and Millie Hope of Nantwich, Cheshire. He is buried in the Gravellona Toce Communal Cemetery in Italy.

S Flynn

Pte. John Owen Saint. British Army, 2nd Btn. Kings Regiment (Liverpool). (d.15th September 1944)

Owen Saint is remembered on Northop Hall Village War Memorial in Flintshire. He died on 15th of September 1944 at the Battle of Coriano Ridge, Italy aged 23 years. He was one of four young men who died during WW2 that lived in Brookside Crescent (a tiny cul-de-sac in the village). Villagers are compiling information about each serviceman named on the Memorial the findings will be published and circulated throughout the village free of charge. Would love to hear from anyone who has information about the Regiment and if possible Owen.

Can you help us to add to our records?

The names and stories on this website have been submitted by their relatives and friends. If your relations are not listed please add their names so that others can read about them

Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?

If so please let us know.

Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.

Celebrate your own Family History

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
