Stories from 15th November 1942

L/Cpl. Len Joseph Day. British Army, 7th Btn. York and Lancaster Regment.

My father Len Day served with the 7th Battalion, York and Lancaster Regiment. I have a photo of a memorial in Rangoon Burma which I found after my mother died recently it shows seven men: Captain C Smith, Sgt. Jones E.J, Pte. F Darley, Pte. Doyle, Pte Milner, Pte. Stoyles, Pte. Stride lost whilst on active service at sea on 15th November 1942. My father never spoke about this whilst he was alive. I believe he was in this action because he once said to me "I felt the ship was going to sink so I released my rounds of ammo and was able to swim to relative safety" that was the only thing ever he told me about.I think they were on a mission to put out various Japanese machine gun positions but I am not sure. My father never claimed his medals and very rarely spoke about the war, never went to reunions or anything like that.

Sgt. John George Duncan. Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, 150 Squadron. (d.15th November 1942)

John Duncan was my uncle and came from Aberdeenshire. Like many of their generation the tragedy was seldom referred to by his brother and sisters. He had left after home leave and on returning to his base must have gone straight out on his final mission almost immediately if not that day. The period was so short the family initially thought he had been killed on his way back to his base.

Apparently during a visit to the cemetery in 1947, they were advised that the plane had been blown up in the air while on route to bomb submarine pens.

The following is a list of the bomber crew from 150 Squadron who were shot down on 15th of November 1942 and are interred at Dinard English Cemetery, France.

  • Alan Harvey Clayton, United Kingdom Sergeant (W.Op./Air Gnr.) Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve 150 Sqdn. Service No: 1376606 A.4.
  • John George Duncan United Kingdom Sergeant (Obs.) Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve 150 Sqdn. Age: 21 Service No: 1346350 A.2.
  • Francis Ferguson United Kingdom Sergeant (Air Gnr.) Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve 150 Sqdn. Service No: 1370437 A.5.
  • Hugh Laurence John Mackender United Kingdom Flight Sergeant (Nav.) Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve 150 Sqdn. Age: 25 Service No: 924909 A.3.
  • John James Perry United Kingdom Flight Sergeant (Pilot) Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve 150 Sqdn. Age: 27 Service No: 1261701 A.1.
  • Vivien James Wotton United Kingdom Pilot Officer (Bomb Aimer) Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve Age: 20 Service No: 126963 A.6.

AM1. John Herbert Stamp. Fleet Air Arm, HMS Avenger. (d.15th Nov 1942)

Over the past year I have been researching my family history and came across John Stamp, 1st cousin 1 x removed, who was an only child of Herbert and Betsy (nee Hymer) Stamp and husband to Vera. My aim is to record for posterity my relations where applicable on designated websites where they have a place for their part in serving the country. John is remembered on the Lee-on-the-Solent Memorial at Gosport in Hampshire.

Can you help us to add to our records?

The names and stories on this website have been submitted by their relatives and friends. If your relations are not listed please add their names so that others can read about them

Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?

If so please let us know.

Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.

Celebrate your own Family History

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
