Stories from 15th December 1941

2nd Lieutenant Basil Holland Pope. Army, seconded to Nottinghamshire Yeomanry Royal Tank Regiment. (d.15th Dec 1941)

Basil Holland Pope died Tobruk 15/12/1941 aged 21 - does anybody have any information as to how he died or know anything about him? He was my uncle and I am trying to research his life.

Richard Playne Stevens. Royal Air Force, 253 Squadron. (d.15th Dec 1941)

Since reading, 'Johnnie' Johnson's book "Wing Leader", I have been fascinated by the story surrounding Flt. Lt. Richard Playne Stevens, 253 Squadron, RAF pilot. JJ speaks highly of him in his book and the great man himself, Dougie Bader, has referred to him, yet little is known of the man. I have found a few tidbits which reveal the death of his baby daughter in a house fire and that Stevens, for obvious reasons, took it very badly. Following this tragedy, it is said that he would scream like a man possessed when engaging the enemy during his time as a night fighter pilot and that he scored a very high tally against enemy aircraft without using any of the emerging technology at that time. One tale reveals that he got so close to an exploding Heinkel He 111 he was attacking, that ground crew found human remains and blood on the fuselage of his Hurricane after the sortie and he made them leave it on his aircraft. Whilst posted to 253 Squadron, Stevens set out to attack an airfield in Holland, Hulten near Grize- Rijen, on the 15th of December 1941, from Hibaldstow. He crashed near the Dutch airfield at 21:30 hrs that night and his remains were interred in the local cemetery at Bergen op Zoom and re-interred after the war at the CWWG site at Zuilen. If you know any more about this individual or the aircraft he flew I would appreciate it if you could forward information on to me. It is a tragic but fascinating story.

Marine Richard Chinner. Royal Marines, HMS Galatea. (d.15th Dec 1941)

Richard Chinner served with the Royal Marines during WW2 and was killed in action on the 15th December 1941, aged 18. He is commemorated on the Plymouth Naval Memorial in Plymouth. He was the son of Samuel James Chinner and Florence Ellen Chinner, of St. Just, Cornwall.

Able Sea. Walter George Craft. Royal Navy, HMS Galatea. (d.15th December 1941)

I lost my grandfather, Walter George Craft, during WWII. He was on HMS Galatea.

Update

HMS Galatea was torpedoed and sunk by the German U-boat U557 off Alexandria, Egypt. About 100 survivors were picked up by two British destroyers. Sadly, 23 officers and 447 ratings were killed.

About two days later, U557 was rammed and sunk by the Italian torpedo boat "Orione" and lost with all hands.

PO.Stoker. Frederick Charles Clarke. Royal Navy, HMS Galatea. (d.15th Dec 1941)

Born and raised in Spon Lane, Acting Stoker P.O. Frederick Charles Clarke was believed to be the only local man on board HMS Galatea. The Roll of Honour as published in The Times newspaper on February 12th 1942 records him as Missing Presumed Killed Clarke F.C. A/STO P.O. (Ty) Lives lost: 22 Officers, 394 R.N. Ratings, 50 Royal Marines and 4 N.A.F.F.I. (total 470).

After the First World War an appropriate way was needed to commemorate members of the Royal Navy who had lost their lives but had no known grave. As most men died at sea and a permanent memorial had to be sited on land, the three manning ports in Great Britain (Chatham, Plymouth and Portsmouth) were selected. After WW2 the memorials were extended to include the naval dead of this war also and it is here that Frederick Charles Clarke is commemorated.

Marine Alexander Davidson. Royal Navy, HMS Galatea Royal Marines. (d.15th December 1941)

I am trying to locate anyone who may have a friend or relatives who served on HMS Galatea. My great uncle, Alexander Davidson from Aberdeen, served on this ship and died when it was sunk on 15th December 1941.

Pte. Luiz Romano Sequeira. Hong Kong Volunteer Defence Corps, . (d.15th December 1941)

F/Lt. Richard Playne "Cats Eye" Stevens. DSO, DFC and bar Royal Air Force, No. 253 Squadron. (d.15th Dec 1941)

In addition to previous notes about Richard Playne Stevens on this website, an excellent and thoroughly researched book has now been released detailing his life, service and death in action. "Lone Wolf" (published by Grub Street in 2019) has been co-authored by the respected military researcher and historian Andy Saunders with Terry Thompson (sadly departed).

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
